Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I happened to walk by just after they posted the notice above and chatted with the site manager for the project. Apparently, the closure is to inspect the tunnel under Allison and Hewitt.

To enable the inspection, they'll be draining the tunnel. They'll also be adding more hard core to the boggy bits of the path to enable vehicle access.

The very friendly site manager took my email address and has promised me some pictures of the tunnel, Whether he'll be good to his word, only time will tell.

Slow progress.  Thank you for this update.

Large sludge gulping lorries appeared on Thursday. They are too big to turn around in TW's compound at the Wightman end of the tunnel so each one has to reverse along the riverside track from Hampden Road. Now there's a tricky manoeuvre for the drivers! I was told that the work was going quicker than expected. In two days more than half the length of the tunnel had been cleared of sediment. One wonders whether same process is ever applied to the bed of the river. Presumably sediment builds up there too, in time, which would make the river increasingly shallow.

Here's a photo.

Another few feet and goodbye goat-house!

The slugegulpers have departed and some of the contractor's clobber has gone. The tunnel is still empty, I believe while minor repairs are made inside.

The dam has gone from the Wightman end of the tunnel although water is barely flowing. The contractors spent some time spreading lorry loads of aggregate on the riverside path, presumably to fill any ruts left by the heavy vehicles that have been along it. There is even a small road roller at work today. Most of their equipment has gone so there is a distinct air of job nearly done.

The contractors have removed their on-site cabin (no doubt containing tea making facilities, toilet, power supply etc), and all the other clobber that has been used during the project including the safety fences around the screen bridge.  Today the road cones along to Hampden Road have gone and they have just removed their anti-theft monitoring devices.  I have yet to see a significant flow of water and the flotsam gathering machine has not yet restarted.   If Thames Water is satisfied it looks as though the completion date of 11th should be achieved.

And now the path is open.

Thank you for your updates!

This what the new surface looks like.

No more icy puddles for children to amuse themselves with..

The new surface looks very unattractive. Perhaps, in time, grass will grow through it to restore the previous appearance.
