Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
New River footpath re-opened
I was able to go for my favourite local walk today - along the New River footpath from Green Lanes (opposite the park) to Seven Sisters Road and then on round the two reservoirs to the Castle Climbing Centre. You can then have a cup of tea in the sailing centre inside the old water pumping station. Then you can walk back down through Finsbury Park, or catch the bus home.
Part of the footpath had been closed by building work on Woodberry Down, but they have re-opened it. The East reservoir section is still very rural as it's a bird sanctuary, but the West has been somewhat spoiled by the new housing estate - all pressed gravel paths and unfeasibly green lawns.
Besdie the East reservoir I passed some allotments with beds created out of those enormous square building sacks - does anyone know about these? It looked like some kind of community project.
There are lots of seabirds - cormorants etc - out on the islands, but it's hard to see them because of the trees. Binoculars would help.
It's really a lovely walk, though can be a bit wet underfoot - I didn't take my wellies and regretted it.
One day I will take my camera and post some pictures on HoL.

Billy, bit sure what's happened but two of your pics seem to have disappeared. Since they motivated me to do this walk, it would be great to have them back.

I agree - this is a nice walk with some good wildlife and open views over the reservoir. The sailing centre cafe is in a brilliant spot with a great outdoor deck overlooking the water, the dinghies and the canoes. I'm surprised it's not more popular: there's hardly been anyone there whenever I've gone.
I would just counsel a bit of caution on some sections if you're a lone woman. The proposition rate is quite high.

I love this walk too. The wildness of the East reservoir and gazing across to Stoke Newington church spire is wonderful. My worry is that as this whole stretch of the New River path gets 'landscaped' along with the massive Woodberrry Down development the wildness will be lost as has happened along the West reservoir. The new densly packed new blocks will front the New River path and reservoirs.

Apparently because the East reservoir is a bird sanctuary they are not allowed to touch it - doesn't mean they won't build right up to the edge of the footpath though.

Thanks Maddy. It's great to know about thi s and I'm keen to try it. But I'm not quite sure where it starts. Can you describe a bit more, opposite the park (Finsbury Park I presume), but where? s

Have a look at Toiras' link above. It has a map (which is good apart from not allowing for the fact the the path is closed off through the Ladder south of Seymour)
