Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not sure whether this is just me being (small-c) conservative, but I really dislike the way Sainsbury's has redesigned its fruit and veg section.

The glass doors make It so much more difficult to actually see what is in each cabinet, there appears to be neither rhyme nor reason to how things are arranged (why are tomatoes in two different places?) and the aisles seem to be far narrower than previously, making navigation with a trolley more difficult, especially at busy times. That aside, it's a joy.

Anybody else less than enamoured with it?

I admire your persistence Phil. I also hate the self-service tills and would much rather be served by a human but the queues are so long and generally my shopping tends to be smaller so I don't have the patience to wait around in one of the lengthy queues. But I think you are right and Sainsbury's is sadly not the only one doing this

oh no, it's not just a Sainsbury's thing. It applies to all the supermarkets, plus WH Smith, Boots etc. I don't use self-service there either (which has meant once or twice at WH Smith that I've ended up not buying the thing I came into the shop for, as there's been no human to sell it to me)

The troublesome relocation of the  fruit & veg should only be for another 3 weeks until the new produce area is completed.

On another note, has anyone noticed how cold it is in there at the moment. I think it's because the temporary hoarding traps the cold air around the chillers - zero fun straight after a swim in the reservoir.

It's always cold in there, especially with the open chiller cabiniets. The ones with doors, while I agree they are much harder to see into, are designed to conserve the cold and save energy.

I noticed the cold right away. It's been cold outside lately and winter is coming. Having to don extra layers just to shop makes it's even more of a miserable experience. Hopefully when it's finished, these issues will be sorted. Let's see!

Avoiding the self check outs is essential if we want to keep staff being employed. Why not while away the time investing in a conversation with your fellow queuers. Lets face it its only really 10/15 mins and are you really in that much of a hurry?

Dominic, I agree.  I could write a book about self-service tills.  (Don't worry, I won't).  At the large Boots in York, where I live, he only human in sight the other day was employed to help people in trouble at the long line of self checkouts.  No cash till at all.  I had to join the throng at the pharmacist's counter to get served.  It was a bear garden.  What has happened to the helpful staff they once employed.  Have they lost their jobs.  It's appalling.  I have never used a self-service checkout and do not intend to - ever.

I used to go to Boots in Wood Green regularly but stopped going there completely a few years back because they got rid of check out staff and had all those self service ones. Unpleasant shopping experience. No thanks. There are other chemists around still. 

Yes I was surprised at this change. Thought they were trying to prevent fresh veges going off or something?

I've just been to Tesco in Stroud Green Road.  It has also caught the "improvement" bug - over ¾ of the store is walled off for re-fit work which will finish some time mid October.

is this an example of spending the profits on building works that is not necessary? Will it make the food cheaper? Will it be easier to see what we are buying? Will it improve the buying experience? Will it speed up the process?
