Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Whilst researching local Italian restaurants on the ladder I looked on haringey online to see where local people recommended.

Seemed to only be able to find Durazzo on green lanes, but then I remembered relative newcomer Buonissimo on west green road ( turnpike lane end) so decided to give it a try. So glad we did!

I had the most delicious seafood spaghetti and my husband had a pizza- both authentic and yummy. We shared a starter and desert and had a couple of drinks each and came to £20 a head. Think that's great value and in my opinion was a much nicer environment than Durazzo(which seems more like a take away restaurant-. I'm sure the food is delicious and it's good value but the lighting and decor just don't do it for me. )

Buonissimo have really have made an effort with the place to make it a bit more trendy with exposed brickwork and natural wood and the staff were all Italian and very attentive.

Only thing was it was quiet for a Saturday night... Only two other tables occupied whilst we were there. I would hate for this place to close down because they are off the beaten track and people don't know they are there!

They also do take away which by the looks of it is what keeps the kitchen busy on a Saturday night.

Go down and give it a try - I'm excited that they are within walking distance and am already planning to take some friends along to spread the word. it's an exciting development for west green road, which is pretty grotty up that end and could do with some regeneration.

i'm so glad you posted this.

I totally agree with you. Its a little hidden treasure. When I went past it was packed (mid week around 7.30pm. Full of trendy types and yummy mummy's. I think the word is out, but definitely still worth shouting from the hills about it.

Perhaps, people could click on like on here: www.facebook.com/pages/Buonissimo/229995347202587 and add any cool shots as there website is a little too traditional and doesn't capture the fact its on par with Jam In A Jar's rustic decor

We went a few weeks ago after hearing about it on HOL. We had such high hopes but it was a bit of a disaster. My husband ordered calamari to start. It was so overcooked it crumbled between your fingers with no calamari left inside, completely dehydrated. Cold too. We complained and were brought out another plate. This time it was hot... but still the same so overcooked there was nothing left but some hard batter.

Mains we ordered one pizza (fine, your usual standard very average take away quality pizza, nothing to write about) but the pasta was quite disappointing. It cost I think around £12 and lasted about 4 mouthfuls. I have never finished a plate of pasta before at a restaurant in my life, and this I finished before my husband had finished his first slice of pizza...

The waiter asked what we thought at the end of the meal and I had to tell him that the portion size of the pasta was tiny. He apologised for the meal and said the chef was new so I guess a bit of teething problems. Husband got his coffee free at the end of the meal... two guesses what he thought of that!

Anyways, its a shame, as we were really hoping for something special. They might do a bit better if they culled the menu a bit. You dont really need a hundred dishes to choose from. Just a few well executed ones!

I and a couple of friends went a few weeks ago too.  My pızza was great and so was the house red wine but, have to agree my friends' pasta portions were very small.  The dessert prices were far too high so we didn't bother with those.  So if you want a pizza and some plonk then definitely recommend as the place though small had a nice atmosphere.  But for decent Italian fare will still go to San Marco's at Bruce Grove.

I agree, San Marco's pizzas are the real deal! Just next to the newly painted Bruce Grove railway bridge.

Awful place--I said so (and explained why) in another thread. Try San Marco's in Bruce Grove (next to BR station)

Disappointed to read such negative comments. I have Italian heritage and I think the food was great. The portion size of my pasta was big- I couldn't finish it- and the price of deserts is what I would normally expect to pay.
I guess you can't pleased all the people all the time, but still I'm disappointed at such negative comments.
Go and try it for yourself!
You're right Jessica. I shouldn't have made the comparison, I was merely mentioning durazzo as that was the only other Italian restaurant I found that had been recommended. I just didn't care for the look for the place- but I will now give it a fair try and not judge a book by its cover. Lesson learnt.

Do you have a connection with this place or with the owner, by any chance? Yes, go and try it. People should be honest about their experiences. Seems you're just gushing comments - why? Yes, as Jessica says, bit rich of you to accuse others of being negative when you make at attack on a new local business.  Oh, and one more thing. Why mention your Italian heritage? Do you have to be Italian to appreciate good Italian food?

No I don't have a connection to the place!!! I just liked it and wanted to tell others to go so that it didn't suffer from the fate if many a small independent restaurant with not enough footfall.. But it seems you've achieved what you set out to do and you've pissed all over my fire. Sigh.

Like Jessica said, you made a negative comment about Durazzo without even having been there. I have tried both, neither are really my cup of tea. If I want pizza, then I would prefer something like Pizza East, SoDo or Franca Mancas. If I want local Italian, then it would be Osteria Tufo or Trullos.

San Marcos sounds interesting, will put it on the list to try.

Finally a good restaurant in Haringey. I went there for the first time and was not expecting much but was nicely surprised. Really good food, particularly the bruschetta. Nice fresh produce and correctly sized as well. The pizza was really good and my wife had a good pasta dish. It is nice to see that good restaurant open in the area finally!!! I would highly recommend it.
