Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just to let you know, I've been burgled on tuesday the 12th of July while I was on holiday !

So please be aware, keep an eye on suspicious people and lock your doors day and night while you're not at home !!!

The police could not find any finger prints, they were wearing gloves.

That is tough, bad luck!

Was there anything you would do differently now, any ideas how they got in etc?

We're living on a shared house. The police said that they came in by the front door with a chisel. We never used double lock it, now we will ! The main mystery is : how did they pass the first door (the sharing door) ?

Anyway, you are all aware now, its all it mater !

With respect, how can i keep an eye on suspicious people when i'm away on holiday ?

You cannot, James, but your neighbours can- this is about communities that have each others' backs!

Sorry to hear this Lily.

The best deterrent is a burglar alarm but failing that, window locks, a London bar, lights on timers etc. I had a leaflet from the SNT recently which said don't just leave your hallway light on - burglars know the occupants aren't sitting on the stairs all night long!

Smartwater is another deterrent (you can get stickers to put in your windows so potential burglars know your valuables can be traced)

FYI i don't lock my house door. If someone wants to break in then they will anyway, saves the cost of a new door if it's locked. We need the courage to leave our doors unlocked and if anything happens bring the full force of law on their heads. Wouldn't it be better if we could all do that ? And have a proper community without all this drip feed of fear ?

That very much depends if your property is insured or not. Leaving the door unlocked invalidates the insurance. The insurance will cover the cost of a new door too. Sorry to hear you were burgled Lilly.
In an ideal world............unfortunaltey we live in a world where people will even steal pot plants! And in a world where the police don't have the capacity to do anything about burglary which is now seen as a "petty crime"

I'm sorry you were burgled it's a horrible horrible experience to go through
James. Good luck with that stratergy, especially if someone has now read your comment.

A year or so ago several houses on the Ladder were burgled. Many seemed to be houses with two doorbells. I guess the logic was that most shared houses have folks who will simply pull the door to and rely on a flimsy Yale lock and not use the more secure mortice lock.

On one house I saw the Yale simply popped off and the thieves were inside in seconds. The second was a neighbour who had only the Yale lock on. However the London bar around the Yale did not give. The burglar had literally smashed the door to match sticks and still did not get in. Even with the mortice lock unlocked. It was stunning to see.

So. For the sake of a new door the despair and utter helpless of the intrusion that would have occured was avoided!

I had a lock changed when I moved in, the locksmith showed how ridiculously easy it is to open yale locks. No damage, just used a piece of flimsy plastic around the door frame and popped it open, took 5-10 seconds.

Hi James, what's your address, I keep my door unlocked too. We're all in it together my friend.

Regards,
Robin Urgaff

The only people I know with that attitude don't have anything worth nicking,
