Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone out there a fungi-freak?

I saw this in my garden earlier and I was curious as to what it was. It is odd because it looks like the gills are on the top of the head. Any thoughts?

Are there any mushroom groups (a fungi version of HoL) that anyone knows of I can join?

I'm not an expert but it looks like the 'gills' are not as such and more down to other factors such as disease of the cap, unfortunately, the easiest way to ID a fungi is by the cap, which makes it more difficult in this case.

OK, so you do not think it is meant to be this way... I have a mushroom book, but am struggling. No worries, I am not looking to eat the thing

I think I've found it; Parasola Auricoma. http://www.nhwildlife.net/album3/Mushrooms/slides/ParAur-0152.html

Forget my previous post, looks like it is supposed to be this way.

Well done, how did you work that out? I have a 'shroom book but this does not feature...

It looks like an import Justin, spores can travel in all sorts of ways. I Googled 'fungi with shredded caps', clicked images and visited the page of the appropriate picture.

I did go to a local mycological group, they were a bunch of fun guys but the premises was very small so there wasn't much room.

Hey, you're a fun guy

If anyone's interested in finding out more about fungi, I can recommend the walks and workshops given by Andy Overall. I've been on a couple of them - one on Hampstead Heath and one in Epping Forest - and they were both enjoyable, educational and absolutely fascinating. Plus Andy's a really nice guy!
