They have also mentioned that, in the last 24 hours, they have had reports of 6 homes being burgled, including one attempted one on the Ladder, in which a burglar was found by a resident standing on a wheelie bin to climb through an open window. Another in Inderwick Road was disturbed by a neighbour.
These break-ins are opportunistic, say MPS Haringey, windows left open or tools left outside that make it easier to force a door or window. In two burglaries in Northumberland Park and Highgate, car keys and then cars were stolen, so it is recommended you don't leave these where they are easy to find and/or take them to bed with you at night

It really is happening a lot at the moment. Over the past couple of months I must have heard of 3 or 4 even before last night (I personally know one of the people involved in last night's spate, though they did not end up being victims I'm glad to say!). What do people think is the most helpful deterrent? What are people's views on external lighting - good or bad?
A burglar alarm is the best deterrent!
But to answer your question, I think an inside timer light is best.
Also, years ago I saw a reformed burglar being interviewed on tv and he said what would deter him was a bathroom light being left on (assuming it's visible from the outside obviously).
