MPs call for curbs on cyclists who put lives at risk

Anti-social cyclists are a potentially fatal hazard to themselves, other road users and pedestrians, say MPs.

They claim the Government is turning a blind eye to the aggressive and dangerous antics of such cyclists, described by one MP as 'Darth Vaders on wheels'.

The criticism of the so-called Lycra louts comes in a report published today by the Commons public accounts committee into improving road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Cyclists.

It criticises the Department for Transport for failing to take seriously enough the problem of anti-social cyclists, some of whom have caused deaths.

Troll.

Adam what on earth are you doing down at Parliament that they say this kind of rubbish?
Odd that the Daily Mail should have concentrated on this aspect of the report and completely failed to mention the key finding of the report which was that Children in deprived areas are "at greater road risk

From the Reuters site
Although Britain is one of the safest countries in the world in terms of road deaths, the death rate of child pedestrians was worse than in many other countries, the committee said.

In 2007, 646 pedestrians and 136 cyclists were killed, with more than 30,000 pedestrians and 16,000 cyclists injured.

The committee called for the Department of Transport (DfT) to introduce more road safety measures, such as speed humps, 20 mph zones and speed cameras, saying the current child casualty rate was unacceptable.

The committee said the higher death rate in deprived areas might be because children in such places were more likely to be unsupervised and to be near roads when they returned from school.

"The department's approach towards child deaths must be one of zero tolerance," said the PAC's chairman Edward Leigh.

"It should give priority to promoting child pedestrian road safety schemes in deprived areas, which suffer disproportionately from such casualties."

Oh wait, this is the Mail. Of course, poor kids dying on the roads not so much of an issue as a few aggressive cyclists getting in the way of the Chelsea tractors
Here's a link to the Commons Report.

One other conclusion in the Report is that "Speed is an overwhelming factor in the incidence and severity of injuries to pedestrians and cyclists, whose chances of survival diminish rapidly at speeds over 20 miles per hour."

This is in line with posting on HoL in support of 20 mph zones.
Thanks for the full link. The Daily Fail built an entire anti-cyclist rant out of one tiny part of the report which was mainly concerned with improving pedestrian and cyclist safety. Shame on them.

Quite separately from this, I picked up and posted on the topic of clocks going back and forth and the link to road accidents here from the RoSPA site
what's wrong with a good anti-cyclist rant from time to time? Keeps them in their place. ;D
