Sick to death of all of these establishments. Exploiting the vulnerable is one thing, giving scumbags the chance to launder their ill-gotten earnings is another. We have had several incidents at the establishment near us - low-key thieving and small-time scumbaggery, and yet there is nothing we can do to get rid of them.

Maybe if the betting shops are robbed enough

MAYBE there are enough of them such that some will close down due to insufficient "business" to go around.
Surely this relatively short stretch of road (Green Lanes) has reached super-saturation point. Someone remarked to me yesterday that there seemed to be few punters inside the betting shops.

I think the problem is that when there are recessions, people do tend to turn to gambling to try and make some money. So i dont think they will close down any time soon unfortunately. Is there anything we can do within Harringay council to stop more places opening up?

Someone on here once commented on the betting shop situation as not really following the same market forces as other shops - that companies will keep shops open even if they aren't raking it in just to stop other betting shop companies from buying them.
I always have a peek when I walk past and it's rare there isn't someone on the fixed odds machines - as James says, that's where the money is.
All of this said, some do shut. I noticed a few months back that one in Crouch End had closed (probably preparing to move to Green Lanes instead - joke ho ho).

As long as people want to gamble their money these shops will stay open. So unless there is a great groundswell of opinion against legislation that encourages gambling (because it is a cash cow) these scenes will play out in our community for a long time to come.

A few of these s**tholes has to close soon. This relaitvely small stretch of road can't sustain them all.
I'm glad they're getting robbed, it's like watching a brutal thug being beaten up. Satisfying. More!

IN APRIL last year, I remember listening in disbelief to a lawyer for Ladbrokes who appeared before the Council's Full Licensing Committee.
There were 6 (six) Objectors at the Hearing of the council's Application for a permanent gambling premises licence for Alexandra Palace, in the name of a council-controlled trading company. In effect, the council was applying to itself for a Licence.
The lawyer assured the Objectors that gambling was not associated with crime and it did not attract crime.
I wonder how many people listening really believed that?
The Hearing was both chaired and dominated by Councillor Harry Lister, who had previously publically advocated a casino at Alexandra Palace. The Objectors' arguments were interrupted, quashed and rubbished (by Cllr. Lister) and of course, the council awarded itself the gambling licence.

This may be swimming against the current, but can I mention that one group of people at high risk from violence are the staff working in betting shops.
Over the years I've known several such people. They were just ordinary local residents who were pleased to get a job. One woman was a single parent with a young child, who found she couldn't manage on benefit.
By all means let's press for the companies to increase security and deal with anti-social behaviour. But if anyone is beaten-up, it's not going to be the directors of the company.

One of the reasons given for why the betting shop doors were always propped open on Green Lanes was because the staff felt scared when they were shut.
It strikes me that the company directors/employees who are members of this site and who no doubt will read any post about their business, might like to do a damn sight more than they do now to tighten up both on security and the control of anti-social and criminal behaviour as they undertake to do when they get their licence from the magistrates, including controlling people who are allowed to enter them at certain times such as early morning or in the evening.
They could even agree to meet with local residents whose lives are blighted by these crime and grime magnets to discuss measures to improve. I'd be only too happy to be part of a 'delegation' given the tatty little slum that passes for a betting shop at the end of my road
Would they have the guts though?

Yeah, you have a very good point - the staff are just doing their jobs, and dont deserve to be harmed in any way. The business owners should definately look to increase security.
