More Bad News on Green Lanes Betting Shops
The Licensing Committee has granted permission for a premises licence for Betfred (next to the Post Office). One slender hope remains in the form of a possible refusal from the Planning Inspectorate for planning permission, whose decision is still awaited, but with the licence now granted, the scales are tipped further against us.
What all this means, which of course we already knew, is that it is impossible to prevent an unlimited number of betting shops opening in our community.

so what's stopping us getting more people? We're all so good at complaining in writing but rubbish at action. Action is what we need, all else has failed. Is this site all talk and no trousers?

some times i feel it is. As I said I'm up for it. Im living in kingston at the moment but will be back in september annd would happily meet up in the interim so help organise any action. BIt ther is no point in doing anything unles we have at the very least 50 people signed up otherwise we will not fill out the place.

I see a flaw in this plan now that the place is open. I think they would pay for people to go in and bet as there never seems to be anybody in there.

Sorry if I'm intruding on this very worthwhile discussion but has anyone set up a specific campaign against betting shops in the area? A lot of people are obviiously and quite rightly very concerned about it, perhaps we should form a group to coordinate action, whether that be in the form of lobbying or sabotage is somethinng to be decided.

This is a bookkeepers' or PR spinner's view and it depends what is meant by 'contributor'. An economist might have a different take. Most producers of goods and services add value and contribute to an expansion of the economy directly or indirectly. The gambling industry by contrast could be thought to be, at best, a zero-sum game, contributing little or nothing to economic growth.
The bets staked amount to transfer payments, but without any socially ameliorative value. The overheads deducted are someone else's income, but they might well be employed in doing something more useful elsewhere in the economy that actually expanded the economy.
The social cost of saturation betting shops in poor areas is not factored into this equation as it is less quantifiable, but likely to show up in the budgets of spending departments such as police, hospitals and social welfare. Then there are the wholly unquantifyable effects on family life, likely to be negative.

Dear all, is there anything we can do? Is there a national initiative against betting shops we can join? Or maybe design some creative guerrilla propaganda campaign against them?

Green Lanes continues its slide into full-on ghetto status.
It seems most of the hipsters have moved out, (probably to Stokey) and the crime, fly tipping, begging, kids flying around pavements on bikes and general dodgy-looking people hanging around all seem to be on the increase.
I moved here around 10 years ago, and the last few Irish and Greek places were just closing down then. Under the rule of Bubasin the place started to look quite respectable for a while, but most definitely this area is fast turning into a proper shithole.
I find it amazing that there is no power available to politicians, police or councils (or residents for that matter!) to stop this rule of gangsters and the instant deprivation and undesirables that a slew of betting shops WITHOUT A DOUBT encourages.
Fast losing hope for what used to be an area with a lot of character and charm..
