Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just wondering how many other people have been bothered by Monk Group would-be insulators during the snowy weather in the last few days. We've had them twice (two different young men guided by the same female supervisor). They refer to a 'free grant' from your gas company (I've checked the gvnmt grants before - we don't qualify).

It's odd that a company with IDs etc appear to have no internet presence (there's a Monk Group registered at Company's House, but it is dissolved and appears to have no relation). There's one blog post from a Midlands retiree and that's it:

I had someone from Mark Group call round this very lunchtime, and I'm a bit fed up.

However, my suggestions is to check with your energy provider whether they're supporting any such scheme at the moment and what possible costs might be involved.

I checked with mine (Southern) towards the end of last year, and they in fact were.

Firstly there is currently funding available in exactly the way it was explained to you as I also work in this industry as a property inspector. Basically the will carry out an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) which give you a guide to you guessed it your homes energy performance - just like the graphs found on fridges and other white goods a electrical items these days. The report supplied with the EPC will give you recommendations which can include things like cavity wall and loft insulation. With this info you can obtain funding from your gas or electric company to have the work done and rather than receiving the saving on your bill you pay the same amount you usually would until the amount is paid off and then start receiving the savings benefit of the work. Look up the NEW government "Green Deal" which is available to evryone and also the company you refer to is the Mark Group not Monk which is probably why you couldnt find them online, they are a reputable and well established provider of these services. Please feel free to ask any more advice on this.

Just interested to follow this up: the 'Green Deal' seems to have some quite complicated cost implications, sadly, and Mark Group are not listed as an assessor or provider for our post-code.

There is a lot of poor information out there so here the link to the official site https://www.gov.uk/green-deal-energy-saving-measures/how-the-green-...

Sorry, but I'm still imagining a bald man in habits going door-to-door round the streets of Harringay with a clipboard trying to encourage residents to take religious orders. I apologise if I'm the only one here who finds this hilarious.

OK. I promised to feed back on the Mark Group guys. So far they seem legit. I had an assessor come round and inspect the house we are proposing needs insulation. I was signed up (and I read what I was signing). I have a date for the insulation installation of the 1st of March.

The documents I have make clear that there is no cost to me in doing this. I did ask who is funding this, as I went to my energy provider and the best they could do was tell me that the Warmfront funding that had been available has run out and they could not do anything for me. The guy I talked to was very pleasant and I will post his number if this all works so others might talk to him and have him come round. He suggested that the funding was tied somewhat to the fact that Harringay has apparently been identified as a high heat loss areas (I did not get far on how this all comes together to be honest). So. I will let you know in 3 weeks if the work has been done and if I have any hassles in having it done.

So far, so good.

Whatever their merits, I'm fed up with them cold calling me despite being told several times not to do so anymore.  I had about 4 cold calls within a year, with one caller peering into our front room to see if anyone was in.

I subsequently sent an online complaint to Mark Group customer services on 15th April, demanding that they stop cold calling and that they reply within a week that they are heeding my complaint.  I said that if they called again I would report them for harassment.

I heard nothing and have just had another cold call.

So I phoned customer services, and they promised to follow up my unanswered email and to give instructions not to call at this address again.  The door knocking is subcontracted, in our area to a company called Apcode or something.  The customer services representative even encouraged me to report Apcode to trading standards! (I think it was because of the peering-through-the window).

I hope that does it.
