The Tottenham Community Choir, founded only last September, gave their inaugural public concert this evening. Their choice for the first number was " It's a Grand Night for Singing " and so it proved.
The programme ranged from golden oldies through show tunes to sacred pieces - Somewhere Over the Rainbow to Ave Verum - and there were several opportunities for soloists, including some plucky youngsters, to shine. Musical Director Tom Fowkes and Accompanist Ann Carey kept the 70-strong choir on the beat and to my, admittedly untutored, ears the ensemble singing was pretty harmonious. One has to admire the achievement in bringing the choir up to this level in such a short time. That Crouch End Festival lot will have to look to their laurels.
St Mary the Virgin church was packed and the appreciative audience, perhaps 200 or more, plainly enjoyed themselves. The next opportunity to hear the Choir will be in July, at the Bernie Grant Community Centre.
