Mandatory licensing of letting agents and landlords comes into law in Wales...a good idea for England too?
Under the Welsh Agents and Landlords Licensing Scheme (WALLS), “fit and proper” person checks will be carried out on all agents and landlords. Any landlord who fails the check or who does not wish to be registered must use an agent.
Agents will have to register, pass a suitability test and become licensed, and must also belong to an approved body – for example, ARLA or NALS.
Both agents and landlords would have to commit to training and continuous professional development, with agents having to ensure that two-thirds of staff received accredited training.
Licences would last three years.

It's already on its way in Enfield. I'd say it's a damn good thing. It'll cost us a bit more money, but everyone will benefit from a better regulated private rentals market.

I agree totally, but it's too piecemeal to do it authority by authority. This article suggests that Labour are looking at it as a possible template for a change in the law in England. I suspect they'll be watching closely how it goes in Wales.

I suppose after 730 years or so Wales has been sufficiently oppressed by English landlords and London agents. I'm amazed they didn't put them on a mandatory leash and muzzle centuries ago. Time for a Referendum. Cornwall, take the hint and do something about your eccentric duchy landlord + old dutch.
