Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The following from Joanne McCartney, Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, Greater London Authority :

Transport for London are beginning their 2010/11 bus service review programme, and I want to alert your readers to this important opportunity to tell Boris Johnson, what we want to get out of our bus services and about where we think the service is not up to scratch.

This consultation centres primarily on those bus routes, which are due to have their operator’s contract renewed over the next year or so. Bus companies will be able to bid for these contracts as they come up for renewal so this is an ideal time to suggest any changes or improvements which you think could improve services. In Enfield Borough, routes 692, 699, N29, 141 & 329 are up for renewal. In Haringey Borough, routes 210, 271, N271, 29, N29, 141, 329, 41, N41, 121, 153, 299, W4 & W5 are up for renewal.

If you think there aren’t enough buses, or find the existing buses unreliable, on any of these routes, find any unreliable or have suggestions for how they could be extended or altered to provide better transport links for your local community – for example to shops, leisure centres, or transport interchanges, now is your chance to let the Mayor know!

Totally agree and out of rush hour it in empty around the stroud green library route. I live on the loop too haringay station (so not directly harringay ladder member) and it drives me mad how it randomly stops anywhere to pick people up and the thundering noise it makes when it hits the speed bumps because it is empty. I end up walking to sainsburys.
No. We don't want a bus route on Wightman Road. If there is a bus route, the road falls under the control of TfL. We see from the Islington case [see Adam's post] that TfL routes are exempt from Islington's cross borough 20 mph. We need to press for 20 mph through compelling and legitimate argument. It's a narrow street where parked vehicles block the pavement and are still damaged on their road side. If the vehicles were parked in the road in parking bays created by pavement build outs at traffic islands, the actual road way would be so narrow that there would have to be a 20 mph [probably lower] speed to pass without clipping on-coming traffic. If chicanes were installed with directional priority the overall effect would be to allow groups of cars through in each direction. Everything would slow down.
The people living on Wightman Road will probably hate me for this but I'd like to see a route with one of those teeny weeny buses going between Wood Green and Angel stations via Wightman, Endymion, Woodstock Road and Stroud Green Road then straight down Blackstock Road and Highbury Park and Upper Street.

didn't a bendy drag one underneath for a few miles in the early days b4 the bus drivers got the hang of it?
OK, you might have me there BUT normal buses do that too, not just bendy ones. When a bendy bus pulls over you are left with the tail sticking out a bit and a sheltered area where you can wait if you're a timid cyclist.
I think us cyclists agree that Bendy buses give us more to think about when negotiating our way along the busy London roads. But when I'm a passenger on the bendy bus I really quite enjoy. All I'm trying to say is, It would be even better if the 29 could take a detour around Ally Pally.

Not here on HOL.. if you read through the discussions, you'll also find that women especially, seem to prefer Articulated Buses and it seems to me that it's a pure waste of money, getting rid of seven year old buses just to satisfy Boris' ego..
The dole money for 28 bus drivers for ten years wouldn't cover the cost of 72 new D/Ds and pay for training as well as cover their wages..
Bendy buses are great for people with prams - can take upto six? And don't forget wheel chair users, they need to use the buses too.

One of the main problems in Haringey is the traffic congestion? So why make it even more difficult for the people of Haringey to get around their own borough? Having to wait for a W5 from sainsburys (I think I saw one back in 2002) or get a bus to Woodgreen and wait for another is enough to make most people prefer to use a car to do a what should be a 5-10min journey.
Boris stood for mayor on a platform that included getting rid of bendy buses. He was elected on that platform. He's keeping his manifesto promises, unlike some others - eh TB ?

To be honest, personally I don't much care if they're Bendy or DD, but I think it's unfair to say that Boris is doing it to merely to satisfy his ego.

I've never quite understood.. (and some of you are going to hate me for saying this) .. why there has never been a bus service along Wightman Road... ?

I could envisage say, a mini bus type service, originating at Wood Green, High Road, Turnpike Lane, Wightman Road, Endymion Road to Stroud Green then with then the choice or either A: right towards Crouch End.. B: left towards Finsbury Park Station or C: straight ahead towards Holloway Road and Archway. It would slot in quite well into the current system covering the last missing links.. providing a service from the top of the ladder say to Finsbury Park and Wood Green.

If you've been following the photo section.. you might have noticed that there used to be many 'round the corner' services between Harringay and Alexandra Park, Bruce Grove & Stamford Hill via Tottenham.. all now gone..
