Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The following from Joanne McCartney, Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, Greater London Authority :

Transport for London are beginning their 2010/11 bus service review programme, and I want to alert your readers to this important opportunity to tell Boris Johnson, what we want to get out of our bus services and about where we think the service is not up to scratch.

This consultation centres primarily on those bus routes, which are due to have their operator’s contract renewed over the next year or so. Bus companies will be able to bid for these contracts as they come up for renewal so this is an ideal time to suggest any changes or improvements which you think could improve services. In Enfield Borough, routes 692, 699, N29, 141 & 329 are up for renewal. In Haringey Borough, routes 210, 271, N271, 29, N29, 141, 329, 41, N41, 121, 153, 299, W4 & W5 are up for renewal.

If you think there aren’t enough buses, or find the existing buses unreliable, on any of these routes, find any unreliable or have suggestions for how they could be extended or altered to provide better transport links for your local community – for example to shops, leisure centres, or transport interchanges, now is your chance to let the Mayor know!

If you have any comments to make, please let me know by 27 March and I will include them in my representations to TfL. You can write to me at City Hall, Queen’s Walk. London, SE1 2AA or email joanne.mccartney@london.gov.uk

Yours sincerely

Doesn't Green Lanes have enough buses. If I am on Green Lanes and I want to go to Stoke Newington I catch the 141 or 341 and walk across the park.

Yep, that's OK if you want the West side of N16, but for Stamford Hill/Clapton Common/Stoke Newington High Street down to Dalston & Shoreditch, the 67 is better. (Saving having to change at Manor House)

BBL wrote: Doesn't Green Lanes have enough buses? I suppose it does - two routes (29,141) Turnpike Lane - St Anns Rd, then three on to Manor House (29,141,341).

On the other hand, the section of road between Turnpike Lane and West Green Road has 4 routes 41, 67, 230 & W4 and is in my opinion, a bit overbussed...

I think re-routing the 67 via Harringay would even that out a bit... plus providing the area with a better connection than currently available..
Ruth - that's a tall order! I'm afraid that the 41 is so well established (94 years old) that it would be nigh on impossible to change it. (The 41 commenced operation on 26 April 1915 between Muswell Hill & Crouch End, a year later extended to Turnpike Lane & Tottenham Hale - For about 25 years (1942 -1968) it was extended eastwards and reached several oriental sounding destinations such as Dagenham Dock, Ilford Station, Stratford & Victoria & Albert Docks!!).

On the other hand, the 67 is a mere youngster - commenced operation on 19 July 1961, although it wasn't extended from Stamford Hill to Wood Green until 1979. In fact, the thirtieth anniversary of the 67 to Wood Green falls in a couple of weeks on 31/03.2009!

Currently, Harrringay routes are all radials.. all, apart from the W5, traversing Green Lanes.. I think I can detect a wish (albeit small at the moment) for some 'round the corner connections'
Bendy buses are the devil, and the 29 bus is just 18 meters worth of chavs and pickpockets with a few innocent people crammed in inbetween. It's a horrible, horrible route, and I only use it if I absolutely have to. Every journey is a nightmare of people playing music on their mobiles, having screaming conversations on their phones, arguing, fighting, all this while I am trying to keep my belongings and myself safe. Horrid.
I'm not sure the people of St Ann's Road would think the re-routing of the 67 is a good idea as it's the only bus that covers this area.

As for the W4, it only travels two stops down West Green and then covers the Downhills Area, but I suppose we are only talking about servicing theroutes for folk who live/off Green Lanes
Thanks for your comment BBL.. I think I obviously didn't make clear what my idea was.. St Ann's Road wouldn't get less 67, but more!

So here once more, my proposal for re-routing the 67: Wood Green via High Road, Turnpike Lane Station, Green Lanes as far as The Salisbury, St Ann's Road, Tottenham High Road, Stamford Hill, etc., etc.,

Of the roads that would loose the 67, only Blackboy Lane would have no replacement - but the 230 parallels the routing from West Green. Of course, in the other direction these roads would loose a connection towards Tottenham and Stamford Hill.

The re-routing via The Salisbury would in my opinion be benifical for Harringay giving an East - West connection currently not available.
Independent Bus Review published July 2009 and the Londonist take on it if you can't face the PDF
