Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of doing a loft conversion on the Ladder that involved raising the roof? Our loft doesn't currently have the head height for an extension, but there's plenty of width. We don't want to lower the ceilings so I'm wondering if raising the roof might be an option. Any recommendations for extension companies would also be good.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you may struggle to get that through planning. There is a lot of emphasis on not moving beyond the existing roofline in the guidance. I found the council planning department were helpful when I called them for informal advice a few times so I would try that to start..

Hi Andrew,  do you have the number for the planning department? I am having difficulty getting through. My questions is if it is possible to extent on top of a rear extension, effectively creating a third-floor dormer in a house divided into 2 flats...

I don't sorry. It was a couple of years ago when I called them. I am pretty sure I just got the number from the website though.

In a house that has been split into two flats you have to go through planning permission rather than permitted development. The rule they generally seemed to apply a couple of years ago was that you could convert with a dormer where the pitched roof was but not over the extension.

I spent some time looking on the Haringey planning website http://www.planningservices.haringey.gov.uk/portal/servlets/Applica... to find examples of what had and hadn't been approved and used that to guide me. (You have to make sure you're looking at flats rather than full houses as the rules are different.)

We had our loft converted by a combination of lowering the ceiling and adding some dormers
