Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Local working men's club
Hi folks
the title of this post might put some of you right off but the Langham Working Men's club has been around for almost 100 years and is very much part of ourlocal history. Yet it hardly gets a mention and is overlooked, just as are the 2000 plus clubs up and down the country. There used to be over 4000 such clubs in their heyday in the 1970s which were often full with queues outside the doors. I am writing about clubs and although my focus is/was on Coventry, the town I grew up in, it has widened. Now I have finally joined the Langham, I am going to talk to members there and start collecting bits of history about that club. It is, like many clubs, struggling to stay open. Maybe clubs have had their day, as some say, but they are very important places to locals, especially older folk and most clubs were once the centre of local communities. I would like now and then to put up things on this site if that would be possible about the club, its life and times. and maybe we could make some links- its a part of the community which we perhaps overlook but its right there on our road! There is also the club in Wood Green and others round and about. I do this research unfunded and unsupported in my own time so I havent got any sponsors. I do have a website dedicated to clubs if anyone is interested www.clubhistorians.co.uk which tries to bring out the community aspect of clubs. (Again, it is sort of my hobby/obsession) Maybe we could support the Langham by joining it? They have bingo a few times a week and line dancing, so I am told. I could always link in HOL to my site once I have something up there about the Langham, Hugh?

There were a few posts about it in here about a year ago - search Langham - but nobody seemed very interested. It might make an interesting video project though.

thanks for that Hugh. Maybe can drum up a bit of interest once I am underway with finding out more about the club.
It is CIU affiliated. anyone who has an associate pass for another club can use it. They dont have catering facilities which the ents sec I spoke recognised was a big drawback.

any club will accept new members and its less hassle to join than before. You just go in there and say you want to join, they will tell you if you have to come back when the secretary is there. They do have some games there but didnt get chance to look around much to be honest. Its not real ale. They have no catering facs so no cheese rolls... Its not a big club and probably not lmuch on offer but if you buy an associate pass once you have joined there, you can go into any CIU club in the country and there are some great ones aound.

There is pool, darts and 4 snooker tables upstairs. No cheese rolls I'm afraid. Just John Smith's and one other type of ale I think. Just not enough custom to justify real ale. Fosters, Carling, Kroenenbourg and Strongbow also on tap to my memory

You can get small barrels of real ale, they would go in a couple of days. If they served it, I' d be there. I would rather drink cooking lager than John Smiths smoothflow.

Yes, I have seen those small barrels in a pub I use in Stratford. Will mention it. I am all for trying to find a nice drink.

Langham has a great smoking shed , which wasn't needed in it's heyday,
seriously , its terribly sad that all these clubs have gone to the wall, they created great community spirit

It's a good one! It is sad they are in decline. They could be revived to some extent if someone in power took notice and really cared about community and bringing people together. I think some clubs now feel entrenched and alienated. I do what I can to promote them through my website and bits of writing but I am only one person... The CIU dont help themselves by burying their heads in the sand. Sorry for rant! I will try to keep positive about supporting clubs and get my book finished!
