Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi there.

I'm looking to sell 500 CDs - a real mixture of jazz, rock, pop, dance, etc. - and am wondering where the best local car boot sale is. Has anyone had any success with CDs in N4? I hear the Stoke Newington one isn't bad but are there many others?

Cheers,

GE

Hi Gideon. We have a page listing all the nearby car boot sales here . Weston Park are definitely running one at the end of the month Hope that helps!

Weston Park is excellent, but do remember that at car boots, people these days won't pay more than a quid for a  CD

A very fair point. I'll be lucky to shift a quarter of them so it's likely pocket money really.

I read this at the same time as the news (reported by the Guardian) that HMV has gone into administration. They quoted Neil Saunders, of "the research house Conlumino": "The bottom line is that there is no real future for physical retail in the music sector" . Which if true, seems like an announcement of poorer quality.

Though if sales of CDs by Amazon are holding up, I wonder whether the problem was the price levels rather than complete disenchantment with the physical 'package'.

Most of the time my musical appreciation - and probably my ears - aren't enough to distinguish good sound equipment from top of the range stuff. But one reason for visiting HMV's classical section on Oxford street was to enjoy music filling up an entire room and being played on what I assumed was the latter. And I still prefer CDs to what seems to me the tinnier sound of a sound dock.

Anyway, if lots of Hol members are unloading their CD collections, maybe there's an opportunity to generate some cash for local charities. As the Government is treating Haringey as a pilot - i.e. guinea pig - for its Welfare Deforms, our Citizen's Advice Bureau, Caris and local Food banks spring to mind.

Of course MP3s etc sound worse. They are compressed - the clue is in the word. CDs are more compressed than vinyl but a bit less prone to damage.  One day when I get that Round Tuit, I'm digitising my LPs, but into WAV not AVI files.

Alternatively you might want to try Flashback records in Crouch End - if you email them a list they'll tell you what they're interested in. You then have to take them in for them to check the condition before they'll give you a price and I can't vouch for what they'll pay - I sent them a list and then ended up taking the CDs to the charity shop and/or giving away to friends because I couldn't spare the time to take them to the shop at that point (we were moving house).

Thank you, all, for the ideas. It might well be that we donate them in the end but I'll likely give it a go with a pound each or six for a fiver as my first port of call. Plenty to think about - and download to my computer before I let them go.

Thank you.

Interesting! I have a few thousand I want to get shot of. The by-product of having spent my entire life working in the music industry. Might try Flashback in CE. Gideon, if you do try a car boot sale, let me know how you get on!

Hello. I may be interested in. My musical collection is huge but I want make it even larger. So, if you don't mind I would be interested in going through you collection and buy some CDs. I'm also interested in Anette's collection. Regards

Neil, I'll add you as a connection. PM me, and we'll sort something.

Anette

Neil, I'm also looking at shifting a lot of CDs (somewhere in the region of 2,000, mainly indie, rock, other stuff too), but have so far been too lazy to get on to eBay. PM me if you want a look at what I've got cluttering up our spare room.

Phil

With pleasure.
