Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Litter Scores Rate Ladder along with Crouch End for Street Cleanliness
In a set of stats given to Haringey's 'street champions' recently, Haringey Council say that the Ladder is doing pretty well on street cleanliness scores. The Gardens and Woodlands Park are apparently doing less well. Does this match your experience?

Yeah it can be bad round here. I used to see loads of beds and mattresses every week. I had a theory that it was arsehole landlords ditching stuff every time they had a new tenant, but ive no evidence for that. What I can never believe is that it must be more hassle fly tipping than getting the council to organize a pick up or taking it to the dump.

Same at the junction of Glenwood and St Ann's - endless stream of bed bases, mattresses, broken cabinets and general rubbish bags that get ripped open by foxes - except it seems to happen overnight, not in daylight hours. I'd agree with Andy's suspicion (post below) that it's landlords clearing stuff out when new people arrive, but, again, no evidence to prove it.

The Passage is clean as it's swept daily and the road sweepers spend a disproportionate amount of time doing it.
Unfortunately they then dispose of their purple bags at the various junctions which then get attacked by foxes etc.
I don't understand this policy of dumping rubbish at the roadside without some system of collection. Even the street side collections on Green Lanes encourage littering and have stained and ruined the new pavements.
As I've said before there needs to be a total rethink. Broken windows theory applies.

I think the upper parts of the roads (from the Passage to Wightman) are fairly litter free but the bottom of the roads at the Green Lanes ends are often dreadful. These parts are also supposed to be swept daily but I'm not convinced that they are - this is also where the fly tipping is at its worst, particularly Mattison.
I concur with dbh that the practice of leaving purple bags out overnight - which shouldn't happen as they are supposed to be collected the same day-often results in bad litter spills due to foxes, cats and crows having a go at the bags. If there is any kind of cooked food in them, they are guaranteed to be ripped open. We have been complaining via Twitter to Peray Ahmet (cabinet member for Environment) but to be honest this has been going on for so long I'm not convinced there's any political will to fix this problem. It really undervalues the work of the sweeper whose work is wasted and attracts other dumping as residents (perhaps not wholly unreasonably) think that what the contractor does is ok to imitate.

You could weep looking at all the empty space in these enormous wheelie bins that occupy our front yards when you see this too. What we need is a new kind of purple wheelie bin that if you have, gives you a discount on your council tax. It also allows the bin men to put the odd purple bag in there if it's not too full. Surely there are people in some of the worst littering areas of the borough who could do with a few more pounds a week in return for something that's really no bother at all?

John, I totally agree that is everyone's problem. I regularly pick up litter from outside my house. If everyone was doing that (as I'm sure plenty do) the problem would be much less.
Equally why do we want to waste our council tax on paying people to pick up our filth.

I regularly pick up litter from my front garden, and from the street to stop it blowing into my garden. And I pick cans out of the hedge and put them in the recycling. But what gets me the most is dumped half-eaten kebabs or fried chicken, which are then distriibuted all over the pavement and road by foxes.

This is actually a really good idea. Raise it with the council.
Maybe a purple sticker gets your black bin emptied weekly?

The Ladder is shockingly bad. I can't believe they have graded it so low it's a constant state. The passage is never clean and the amount of dog mess is still unacceptable. Maybe we get used to it as we live in a city but just take a look at the street and meter by meter you will see rubbish on the street at any time.

This seems to be based on "App reports" I can assure you there's a hell of a lot of dumping and litter in West Green/Bruce Grove.
