Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

LibDem's Schmitz says Lammy 'claimed £25,000 .... for second home'.

A campaign letter from David Schmitz (Liberal Democrats) posted through Harringay letterboxs this weekend claims;

'Tottenham's Labour MP has claimed £25,000 of taxpayer's money for a second home.'

To the Liberal Democrat team; Can you reveal your source? What exactly was claimed for and for which home?

To the Labour team; Can you refute this claim or explain it?

Maybe other HOL members have different questions re the above claim.

This is referring to a claim made between 2002-2004 for a second home in S London You can see David Lammy's expenses claims on this page under staying away from main home. This was written up in 2009 by Lib Dem Mark Pack here in which he quotes from a 2004 story in the Haringey Advertiser about Lammy's second home in S London.
What the Labour team have to say about this, I leave up to them but the Lib Dem story is fundamentally correct.
So it's not a recent claim. Thanks Liz.
Whilst it is not a recent claim shocking nonetheless. Yet another reason not to vote for that chap. I shall make sure everyone I speak to is made aware of this fact. In fact I've decided as a good citizen to engage all sorts of strangers where ever I go from parks to shopping, cafes about the need to vote. I've been quite pleasantly suprised how many ordinary people share my dissatisfaction with our current MP. Its great I've never talked politics so much and I'm wondering around amazed how people actually want to hear how I'm voting and why- and people share so much I'm sure because I'm not a member of any party-
- hey ho we may have a quiet revolution yet in Tottenham.
I think you could do a bit more digging before you go slagging him off to random members of the public. £25k over two years is very reasonable rent for near Westminster.

There's nothing wrong with our MP it's the bloody council that is dysfunctional. Concentrate on the people seeking to represent you in your ward, that is where your vote will really count.
It may be a very reasonable rent for near Westminster but why did he need a second home at all ? Isn't the Ladder near enough ?
I don't think it is if you work very late at night and have to get a cab home.
Let's see;
Travel card for two years: £1000 * 2 = £2000
Cabs home late at night: 140 * 2 * £40 = £11200
An hour and a half extra sleep each night when you're doing all that schmoozing early in your career = priceless.

It's not a duck island, is it?
thanks John, for pointing out how ridiculous and unfounded many of the claims made by the press about MPs expenses were. Many had more to do with jealousy and party political manouvering than about how much things really costed.

If you want a parliament on the cheap, go and live in China and see what you get!

Looking in from the outside, what strikes me about the UK is the continual lack of investment in the country and the obsession (started in the Thatchers years?) of trying to do everything on the cheap. Believe me -it shows..
The sad thing is Stephen, this claim was made by his Lib Dem rival for the seat in a personal letter to potential Lib Dem voters and he left out the fact that it was over two years. I have come to expect better from him than that.
Oh, I don't know - a duck island on the New River or River Lea - at least he could use it as a Constituency Office.
Lynn Featherstone managed in 08/09 with £458 for travel to Westminster and £0 for stays away from her home. But then, she's a woman and is probably used to keeping an eye on the pennies :-0)
Excuse me John, but I think you are comparing apples with pears..

Featherstone is a (mere) MP responsible 'only' for her constituency.

Lammy is a member of the Government as well as being a constituency MP.. therefore I imagine he spends more time at Westminster and I also imagine that that could be disruptive to his family life and V.v.

look, you can't expect the world from MPs and not expect to have to pay for it..

and I'm certainly not trying to defend all MPs
Well... he didn't have a family back then and he may have been a minister but I don't think he was. Anyway, let those without sin cast the first stones eh?
