I thought I'd let you know that a week ago on Friday, a young pleasant-mannered black man rang our bell asking us to sponsor him for his penalty shoot kicks in aid of the NSPCC. He had a very amateurish "form" and told us he was a member of the Tottenham Hotspurs Reserves, and that he was going to kick 100 balls in aid of the NSPCC the next day, Sat. We thought he seemed earnest and genuine, but we only offered to sponsor him, although he asked us to give him the money up front. My husband was suspicious after he left, as he thought it odd that someone should ask for sponsorship only the evening before the event. We could find no person with the first name Darren (as he said his name was) on the Tottenham Hotspurs Reserve website. Nor could we find any reference to this NSPCC event on the website. He said he was from 40 Claremont Road, but when my husband checked there on Sunday Sep 27th, there was no one there of that name or description.
He didn't come back to collect his "sponsorship" money, but we learned via email that he went to other houses, sometimes giving other addresses as his home address.

I used to get this quite frequently from the children on Fairfax Road - one even trying to get money from me twice! In aid of an apparent sponsored swim I've yet to be contacted about (I refused to give money upfront).

this is such a shame. My husband recently went door to door in our street to raise sponsorship for a run he was doing in aid of gorillas and received a tremendous response from our neighbours. This kind of thing makes raising sponsorship for genuine causes even harder.

I've wondered about this.
A few years back a little girl asked me for sponsorship for something (I think it was swimming ...) and I was happy to do that - but then asked for the money there and then. The next year someone else came round and said it was for a football thing - again, said I'd do it but asked them to come back to collect the money. They didn't.
I like to think I'd not be put off sponsoring anyone again, but I'd never hand the money over first now.
