Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone,

We live on the Ladder and have large internal doors, coming in around 85.5 x 205cm (33 ²¹/₃₂ x 80 ⁴⁵/₆₄ inches).

I’m really wanting to replace the awful student like fire doors we currently have, but I just can’t find any that size on local groups / marketplace. I still need to check out the salvage yard in Enfield, but does anyone have any other tips? I presumed that the ladder being built at the same time, albeit by different people, door sizes would have been similar but this doesn’t seem to be the case.

Also, does anyone also know if it’s privately owned if they have to be fire doors? We’d love a more original door to our flat, but read on the council website it had to be a fire door.

Thanks in advance!

The salvage yard is called Nostalgia and New they are really good. We had haringey building control sign off our side return, you have to have a fire door leading to the kitchen, our original doors leading to the sitting rooms had cracks in them, we had the option of replacing them or having fire panels fitted to them, our original building control company went bust so had to go to the council, fairly sure the original company wouldn’t have brought up the issue of a crack in the door, haringey building control didn’t even mention the missing door handles and holes where the old one were! We went for the latter, If you have wired in fire/smoke alarms then this ticks a lot of boxes. Hope this helps.

We’ve had a private building control sign off our side return. We have a fire door fitted between the kitchen and hallway and wired smoke alarms, yet we have been told to replace our living room and bedroom doors. This is proving to be a real pain as there are no standard doors available that fit the door frames (with a maximum of 3mm adjustment allowable on the doors). Bespoke doors have a lead time of 20 weeks and cost a fortune.
If anyone has been through this issue themselves and managed to find a supplier with various sized doors, please let me know.

Thanks both, much appreciated, I think ideally we will have fire doors throughout but in-line with Nick they're hard to find and very expensive. We have wired smoke alarms so at least that's one box ticked.

With regards to fire doors, my understanding is that the rules are different if you're just replacing internal doors as opposed to having a renovation project done. It's certainly not required that we all change existing doors to fire door standard. So, if you're just replacing doors, it would be almost impossible to police, anyway.

As to door size, our reception room doors are 81x200. So not a million miles off. We were up at the Enfield yard at the weekend for something else, but we noticed the doors and were shocked by the prices. Have you looked at ebay - if all else fails!

Thanks Hugh, I also wondered how they would police it. But thanks for the heads up around prices, we will go and take a look at Nostalgia and New, hopefully not as expensive as custom made!
