An earthquake of a win for the Greens in St Ann's with 1056 votes vs Labour's 589. (posted on the fly).

Nothing special.
ONE of the reasons for less-than-stellar council performance, may be that too many Cabbies want to get out to do that something special
Publicity and quick-fixes are the name of the game.
And so, too little long-term commitment to serving this Borough.
As co-chair of Haringey Green Party I would like to thank everyone who supported us in the St.Ann's by election. After so many years of campaigning in the borough this is a real breakthrough for us. Many things worked in our favour, not least the desire for change, a cracking campaign and the rather odd decisions being made in Westminster. Our new councillor Ruairidh, pledges to work hard for local residents. Thank you everyone.
No need for vagueness about "rather odd decisions being made in Westminster." Do please tell it plain.
I hope we share disgust at Starmer's expressed belief that he now owns the Labour Party; referring to it as "my Party". Plus share my loathing for Starmer and Reeves putting more children into poverty. And share as well my rejection to anyone who like them pretends to Social Democracy.
As the brilliant Mhairi Black once explained, she was from a traditional Labour background. Like me and millions of others, she said that Labour left her, and not the other way round.
I don't know Councillor Holly Harrison-Mullane.
I do know that elected councillors are there for residents!
It's not about avoiding a by-election. Turning up at just barely enough meetings. If an elected councillor can no longer do the job for people in the ward then they should resign.
Please have some self-respect! Do not take the money because some Party apparats urge them to avoid another Party getting in.
If someone can't pull their weight then give another person a go!
It's no shame to admit that you can't carry the weight - hopefully for a while. We're humans; we need to rest and recharge. Or switch to something different.
Holly, the residents are your neighbours. Show them some respect.
elected councillors are there for residents!
In theory, councillors are there to represent residents to the council.
This is largely true for Minority or Opposition Parties. However, given the power and influence of the bureaucracy, the tendency is for members of the Majority Group to represent the council to residents.
Given that some ruling group members aim to shimmy up the political pole to higher things, this is a strong tendency.
In the 1990s, I wrote complaining to then-leader Toby Harris about his council slashing library opening hours (plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose).
He wrote back saying among other things, that the cuts had been agreed with the Unions (as if they had any choice in the matter). I wish I had not torn up his letter in disgust.
Baron Harris of Haringey has been a Member of the House of Lords for more than 25 years.
Clive Carter and I got to know each other when he was a Liberal Democrat Councillor for one term. I also grew to like and respect some other LibDem councillors. There were very many excellent councillors in those years - in both parties. No shortage of obedient kiss-upwards party hacks, it's true. But also people who thought for themselves and saw the job as representing and battling for local people.
I always listened carefully to the Party Whip. And followed their advice. When it was sensible and if I agreed with them. And above all when when it was in line with the interests of residents.
Thanks Clive, for he link to Dave Winskill in the Ham and High. It's pleasing to see news of good people still plugging away. I saw a photo of former councillor Juliet Solomon playing cello in Frome.
David Winskill comments here on the St Ann's ward by-election results.

If the Ruling Group seek to maintain their nearly unbroken monopoly on power, then they would do well to pay more attention to the needs of residents.
This includes reducing so much attention to Borough-of-Culture 2027 and on personal focusing on Parliamentary opportunities,
i.e. consider leaving to do something special (attributed to Joseph Ejiofor).
Not enough attention is paid to the boring basics, especially managing the finance.
The previous leadership incinerated millions of tax pounds on wheeling and dealing in a clutch of irregular property deals, some of which were referred the Police.
The council is better at sweeping this under the carpet than in learning lessons.
How Green is thy voting ~
The Green Party are now well positioned to consolidate the ground they've gained and to extend their influence into nearby Wards.
Remember the Greens are not the only opposition to this incompetent Labour Council and in other wards the Lib Dem’s will have a stronger chance to win seats. It’s time this complacent party are replaced with elected members who care about real people.
IN my view, the environment is likely over time to become the dominant issue, both locally and nationally.
The current local council leadership is focused on Borough of Culture 2027 (at much cost to public funds) plus the desire to do something special: beyond Haringey.
Some Councillors are interested in improving our environment, but the current leader, not so much. Progress is tiny and the 2020 climate action plan of the "climate emergency" council has largely been shelved.
Nationally, the über New-Labour Government under Starmer has pressed their gear lever even harder into reverse on their earlier environmental polices. And, without looking in their rear-view mirror, the Government is even accelerating.
Yesterday, a significant representative of a petro-states rubbished Net Zero.
The weighing-in on net-zero and climate change by the architect of New Labour, may well influence New-Labour 2.0.
PS ~ this morning, the Govt. doesn't entirely agree with TB
In a sign of the acrimony swilling around this debate within Labour, one government source suggested Sir Tony's comments may have been affected by the Tony Blair Institute having received funding from oil rich Saudi Arabia.
Hi Pamela Harling,
Can I please ask the Greens to consider taking-up the basicvideo model adopted by Hugh Flouch and Liz Ixer some years ago.
Leaflets? Are last century.
Like me many people may no longer be interested in voting a straight Party Line if there are no longer three candidates who deserve all our votes. I'd like to see three individuals interviewed on line by independents. I certainly don't want three council ward candidates hiding behind a party script; or like the Donald Trump creepy, ultra loyal, Sci-Fi androids we now see on line.
For example, cheap tech is available for us to get a view of the people standing for each seat next year. And to get a flavour of what makes people tick. And to see if they understand local tasks. The whole world is changing fast. As the Green Party knows more than most. I imagine that somewhere across the UK, Green Parties are already experimenting.
Years ago I was a primary school governor when we hired many new teachers. We asked one candidate about evaluation. It was great to hire this enthusiastic and insightful candidate who told us she asked the children to sing their names when she called the register.
I wasn't a Corbyn fan. But had no doubt he campaigned with principle and in passion.
