Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Replies are closed for the previous discussion about the plight of landlords, particularly those in Enfield and Liverpool finding it onerous to pay £250 (early bird payment) towards a council registration scheme. I tried to add my contribution a couple of hours ago, (before the last contribution).

As well as extensive tax breaks landlords can also receive council grants paid by us out of our council tax "The amount of grant is half the cost of the works up to a maximum of £30,000." with the proviso that the tenants are council tenants. How many householders would like the council to contribute so well to the value of their property, or people renting enjoy a contribution to their rents.

What other business has all costs of mortgage etc payed for them and at the same time the value of that business is guaranteed to rise inexorably so that when the landlord wants to sell up there is an enormous pay off.

I think it is time that rent controls were introduced again. Many other countries e.g.Canada and Germany have them and they work well.

This thread grew out of a previous one http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/landlord-starts-legal-f... , started and supported by a group of landlords in Enfield (and Liverpool).

Todays 'Guardian on Line' gives the background to the housing crisis in Enfield and is well worth reading to understand the plight of people desperate for accommodation and the strains placed on those working for an emergency housing office.

“We’re being hit by a perfect storm: rising house prices, the squeeze in the rental market and the benefit cap,” says Sally McTernan, who runs Enfield’s housing service.

Enfield council is trying a radical approach "To reduce its dependence on private rentals, the council has arranged a credit facility of £100m and begun bulk-buying homes. It’s introducing a scheme to license private landlords so controversial that it’s being challenged in court*. And for the first time in 30 years it is building council houses. Furthermore, in defiance of Eric Pickles, it is using a loophole that means it won’t give tenants the right to buy."

*challenged by the "hero" landlord of our previous thread Mr Regas.

come back from 5 weeks spent in Tarifa (spain) with family and literally a total news black out for 5 weeks  to a big catchup. I see private landlords are still being knocked but well done to Enfield for thinking like an entrepreneur. social housing is the responsibility of those that collect taxes. a small scale landlord is a tax payer and worker like us. blame the route cause and those that are knighted, create policy and celebrated for their contribution to society.
