Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just wanted to comment on how much nicer Finsbury Park is now that it’s been shut off from cars. The park feels more open and the area between the road and Endymion Road no longer feels intimidating (groups of men sitting in cars, engine running, music on). I really hope this continues after the lockdown.

Entirely agree. Why anyone felt there was a need to provide parking in a park in a dense city like London is beyond me - it's hardly in a remote area!

I’ll second that. Beyond the need for the TV news editors’ need to fill airtime with ‘relevant’ coverage, I’ve been trying to work out what might be the real changes brought about the current crisis, especially the positive ones. Let’s hope things like this may be amongst them...,,.which makes me wonder whether an issue like this may be one of the few occasions when a petition may be of some use in making the Council aware of thepopular support such a change may have.......??

Hopefully the positive impact on air quality will be a catalyst for change to some environmental policies.

I totally agree Rhianna.  You can walk in the road - which you need to now to keep your distance from others. This should become a permanent change!

Yes, enjoy it while you can. Don't get carried away, though. Remember, post virus older people will still want to get to the park in a vehicle of their own or brought there by someone else. I know someone in Tottenham with health issues who goes there in his car to walk his dog. Also, people doing and organising team sports would also value parking. Not to mention people with small children and all their accompanying paraphernalia. Not everyone lives on top of the park or gets around on a bicycle.

The ideal situation would be to make some disabled parking spaces near the Endymion Road entrance so that people with mobility problems could have access.  As for the other people who park there, they seem to be mainly used by lads playing music, having a spliff or, on one memorable occasion, a self pleasuring moment.

Yes I agree. There has to be some sort of middle ground. Make spaces available for those who genuinely need their car so they can use the park, like those with mobility problems but not for those who just want to hang out in their car and disturb the peacefulness

Not everyone enjoys the outdoors in the same way as you and me. Are they breaking the law? Is it a matter for the police or parks department? Perhaps not, in which case we have to bear it.

It not about laws Steve.  Use of the park is local authority matter as it’s not the public highway.  It’s about what works best.  Contrast a walk through Clissold Park where you don’t have to keep your eyes open crossing a road and Finsbury Park where you do.  If people are happy to continue to allow vehicles access to FP, fine.  If after the experience of it being car free they don’t, fine too.

Self-pleasuring? Ah yes, that would be covered under "outraging public decency". I do love that phrase.

Buses stop right outside.

Isn't the whole area so much more plesant now with the much reduced traffic - lets continue that after lockdown! I can leave the windows open in the front of the house and its not noisy and it doesn't get black stuff settling inside, walking around the Ladder Roads you can smell the plants and hear the birds. When the odd car does go by you can smell its exhuast fumes and it makes you realize how bad they are. Petition the council to stop through traffic in Harringay and get rid of all the residential parking I say :)
