An exciting evening of contemporary jazz with great London musicians playing compositions and arrangements by saxophonist Len Aruliah.

Although born in the UK, Len Aruliah grew up in Vancouver, Canada, where he studied
saxophone with Julia Nolan, David Branter, and Stan Karp, and arranging with Fred Stride.
He has a Bachelor of Music degree in classical saxophone from the University of British
Columbia School of Music. He has also studied at the Banff Centre for the Arts Jazz
Workshop working with Hugh Fraser, Kenny Wheeler, Pat LaBarbera, and Don Thompson.
In 1998, he moved back to the UK, where he has performed with diverse groups since
arriving in London: touring with singer Gene Pitney, and also playing for theatre
productions of Simply Heavenly at Trafalgar Studios, Hello, Dolly! at Lincoln Theatre
Royal with Anita Dobson, and Marilyn & Ella at Stratford Theatre Royal and the Apollo
Theatre in Londonʼs West End.
As a jazz performer, Len has worked in Vancouver with guitarist Jared Burrows in several
groups, and in London with Paul Weinrebʼs Tarantula, the Hot Orange Big Band, the
Charles Condy Quartet, the 4Seasons Band, and his own groups. In 2007, he released his
first album, Full Circle, featuring a jazz quartet playing his original compositions. In 2011
he formed a new sextet to perform his current repertoire of intricate compositions. The
London brass quintet Mardi Brass recently commissioned his piece Cobalt Blue, which
they recorded on their upcoming release Something Blue. As an arranger, Len has
written and recorded horn arrangements for jazz singer Rose Taitʼs album The One and
gospel singer Joy Ibisaʼs album Iʼve Got Joy. He is also an active music educator,
teaching woodwinds, keyboards, composition and improvisation. In Vancouver, he has
performed concerts of his compositions with students at Capilano University. He has been
a regular faculty member of the South Delta Jazz Workshop since 2005, and in 2011 he
was guest composer for the SDJW Faculty Concert. In London he has taught at the British
Academy of New Music, Goldsmithʼs College, and Morley College, as well as privatand in schools throughout the city.
