Jazz at The Salisbury presents - Sunday the 11th of May - The Cervantes Qunitet

A fantastic band at the Salisbury this sunday.....

Cervantes Quintet

Pianist John Cervantes presents his new flamenco-inspired quintet, driven by an electrifying rhythm section of cajon, drum kit and palmas. Cervantes Quintet perform brand new jazz compositions fusing fiery flamenco grooves with impassioned melodies and adventurous improvisation. The band features a stunning line-up of performers:

flautist Gareth Lockrane (Bheki Mseleku, Jack DeJohnette, Incognito, Gwilym Simcock Nonet / BigBand), Cadiz-born percussionist Malick Mbengue (Chano Dominguez, Julian Sanchez),

drum kit player Jon Desbruslais (Los Charly’s Orchestra, Buddy Greco),

and double bass player Sandy Suchodolski (Quentin Collins, Renato D'Aiello).

John was first exposed to flamenco jazz by listening to Chick Corea's various projects. This set in motion an interest that saw him studying the various flamenco song forms and rhythms, and seeking out flamenco musicians in London. In the summer of 2013 John began writing a set of material using elements of the rhythms and harmony he'd been listening to as starting points for jazz compositions, and hand-selected the perfect group of musicians to play the music. Their live debut in Feb 2014 saw them playing to a sell-out audience at The Vortex. The quintet plan to record in summer 2014.
