This year Thursday 17 May is IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia. The day is marked globally and Haringey Council is flying the Rainbow Flag outside the Civic Centre in Wood Green for one week to mark the event and show solidarity with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) residents.
Cllr Bernice Vanier, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “There are many countries in the world today where it is a criminal offence to be gay. These countries punish citizens because of their sexuality and in several countries people found guilty can be executed.
“Here in the UK, throw-away remarks are offensive and demeaning to those who experience them. The fact that offensive language and insulting references are still used today is a tragedy. Homophobic views are not acceptable in Haringey and I am proud that the council is lending its support to IDAHO by flying the Rainbow Flag.”
