Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Important Haringey Parkland Walk consultation!! Until 5th sept!!!!

IMPORTANT HARINGEY PARKLAND WALK CONSULTATION!! Until 18 Sept!!!!

HARINGEY COUNCIL WANT TO RESURFACE THE ENTIRE PARKLAND WALK – but they’re not telling us with what material and what this could mean for our precious nature reserve.

Please feed into this Parkland Walk survey where the council are asking pretty limited veiled questions for their plans to RESURFACE the whole of the walk.

Remember the scandal of the tree fellings for bridge works where we lost 150+ (modest estimate) trees and a lot of valuable vegetation was brush cut so they have a history of mismanagement on this nature reserve.

Part of the problem is the Parks and Highways depts are leading this - and their focus is not ecology-based which it needs to be on a nature reserve, they're thinking structures and road surfaces.

They don’t say what kind of surface – for example, a hard non-porous surface could mean the walk is turned into a cycle/scooter superhighway – not good for relaxed walkers, insects or nature and there could be a risk of flooding.

They don’t say how much damage this work will cause to existing trees or vegetation – remember in 2021 they chopped at least 150+ trees for bridge inspections.

They just talk about accessibility which of course we all want  - BUT at what cost - both nature and accessibility need to be held in balance.

THIS IS A NATURE RESERVE, NOT A PARK it's supposed to be a wilder place and any surface will need to allow rain and water through and insect and wildlife, soil and tree ecology to remain protected.

Simon Farrow heads up the Parks dept and is not green-minded, the PW is still waiting on an updated ecology plan from the conservation officer Annabel Foskett. There is an absence from the council where there should be a strong conservation team fighting for this space - and this has to be volunteers and the public.

The Friends of the Parkland Walk are worried about this - if they have to have a surface they want one that is nature/insect/bird friendly, porous and as sensitive as possible.

Other concerns: that it will turn the gentle walking space into a CYCLE/SCOOTER RUN THROUGH. There could also be FLOODING IMPLICATIONS for houses along the walk - if surface used is not permeable. -damage will be caused to the ecology of the nature corridor - it could break up the continuity of the path for nature as has been done on Tollington Park and will be done at Stanhope Road Bridge.

Anyway, have your say here and use the comments boxes as the questions are very limited! Thanks Haringey Tree Protectors Campaigning to Protect and Preserve Mature Trees in Haringey.
