Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

PLANS to tackle the number of family houses being converted into illegal bedsits by "rogue landlords" have been unveiled by Haringey Council.

A grant of £140,000 won by Haringey planners will be used to target landlords that split properties into houses of multiple occupation (HMOs).

This is really good news i hope they back up what they are promising. Thanks Liz
I'm not convinced this will make any concrete difference. The council planning department has told me that their hands are tied as long as separate kitchens are not put in. A landlord on our street (Pemberton) ripped out all the chimney breasts and put sub rooms in each room which were clearly intended to be used as bathrooms/kitchens (you could see all this quite clearly through the windows!) and then advertised the rooms through Brian Thomas. However, because he did not equip them, the council enforcement office said that it was powerless to act (they visited), and he could have up to 6 adults living in the house. Obviously he just bides his time and when things have calmed down puts in the kitchenettes and bathroom equipment and Bob's your uncle. Does anybody know differently? There is now another owner a few doors away who is probably doing the same thing.
This is ironic coming from Haringey Council. The house next to mine has been illegaly converted into two flats in 2003 and has been only used exclusively by Haringey Council tenants since 2003. We have complained several times to Haringey Council since 2003 and have been told 3 times by Council Officials that the landlord would be instructed to reconvert into a house. The house is still divided today into 2 flats and still being used by Haringey Council. They have clearly failed to implement their own enforcement policy and we are still waiting from an explanation from them about this. About the above grant I presume the Council would say this does not fall into a HMO since the house has only been converted into 2 flats and is only 2 story high. Rogue landlords appear to be welcome in these cases.
A frustrusted property owner and resident!
I think it's time people at the council were honest with themselves. They have a massive queue of people needing housing and a poorly funded planning department. If you don't believe me that the council intentionally do this I heard it from the mouth of one Nilgun Canver at an area assembly. And I have witnesses.
John, was that at one of the AAs up in the Greek Church Hall a year or so ago? If so I think I was there too. I must admit I can't keep track of all LBH's denials. Ever wondered why Harringay & St. Ann's AAs aren't minuted??

I don't know about the council being honest with themselves, it's high time they were honest with us, the rate-payers, wot pays their wages.

Feathering nests with party whips, springs to mind.
Yes it was and yes you were there. I remember poking the person next to me and saying "told you so".

I really honestly think that they think they're doing the right thing. Certainly they're very envious of the money some of us home owners appear to have made on our houses.
Ah yes, did that meeting get quite heated over the HMO topic? If so, I remember it well.

Do you think they are envious of those home owners who might now be in negative equity?

Do you think that home owners = speculators? Personally I don't. Surely,'buy to let' policies have much to blame for the exorbitant house prices, and have denied many many people from aquiring their own properties, with all the tax & maintenance costs that accompany them.

After all, the equity is only released when the property is sold, and then one has to find another property that will also be very expensive.

As you rightly say home owners only appear to have made a lot of money.
I think its time their lack of control over these rouge landlords is exposed via the press.
How is it so bloody obvious to us who these landlords are and what houses are owned by them? The planning office needs an over haul ASAP and old timers who constantly pass COLs to rouge landlords need to be fired.
I personally cannot keep going to the planning office and clearing their mess up. They get paid to make sure illegal HMO's dont happen yet we have to constantly check on their slack work.
Fed up and bored of the whole subject.
The house next door to us was illegally converted in 2007, we made a huge stink about it, got Lammy involved as the council refused to do anything about it, and yet their policies about conversions and busting the landlords remains unchanged. The house next door to us is still four shitty bed sits and its brought the tone down in our row of cottages. Now the council have even pandered to the lazy low lifes [who the DSS/council has placed to live there] as they cant use the refuse collection properly and have given them a daily refuse collection! Why? Would love to see this happen in Crouch End. This needs to be addresed in 2010 its been allowed to fester for far too long.
I am beginning to wonder if it's a simple case of the people who do the job not living here and seeing it as a place for the kind of people they're putting into illegal HMOs. After all, what must they think of us trying to bring up a family in what is basically inner city London? Maybe they think we deserve this for being so stupid, i mean, they'd never do it.

Slightly shocked to find out that when the local schools were closed it was because some staff commute in from the home counties to teach our "inner city" kids. On top of what must they think of us morally (it costs as much, if not more, to live in Enfield/Hertfordshire as it does here) what do we think of them claiming the London weighting?

Sorry that this is slightly off topic, back to illegal HMOs... I'll open up another discussion if this proves too interesting.

Really! Been like that for years John.
I completely agree with you on that one!
