Hi, I haven't seen your swarm but I have identified a honey bee swarm (nest/ colony - sorry, I don't know the term) in the roof of my house. I don't suppose you know anyone who would be able to remove them? They are on the first floor and there is easy ladder access and external access via a window...

I thought bees were protected, and the advice is "we need all the bees and leave them be".  I don't think they actually do any harm to the house.

Laurie,  I’m certain a lot of beekeepers would be interested in taking your colony.

When one set up home in my compost bin, some wonderful guys from Finsbury Park hotfooted it to mine to take them. I wrote about it here https://www.harringayonline.com/profiles/blogs/a-beelicious-nature-...

It was utterly brilliant to see them at work.

Try contacting the British beekeepers association which advises on swarm removal. If your colony turns out to be wasps, they usually advise on that too.  https://www.bbka.org.uk/

Thanks Liz. Have already been on to BBKA but so far no luck...

Did you find them?!

Honeybee on Apple iOS 12.2

sadly no...

Whilst we should all embrace honey bees unfortunately when they take up residence in a cavity wall or chimney it is the honey production that causes the problem.

Honey is an extremely dense product and I have seen chimneys blocked with honeycomb and leaking sticky honey into the fireplace when attempts have been made to remove it. Many years ago I witnessed a ceiling void seeping with honey and bowing under the weight of it where a colony had been well established for several years.

Under these circumstances call a bee keeper for advice but I'm afraid sometimes the only option is to terminate the colony and remove the honey.
