Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Identify this plant?
I have a mystery plant in my garden! It's slightly reminiscent of a potato plant but the leaves are smaller and darker. It has sprays of tiny white bells which are developing into round green berries...which i guess might ripen to a different colour

It looks like Black Nightshade – Solanum nigrum. If it is its really toxic so I would pull up and destroy it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanum_nigrum

I think you are right. I did check whether it was a deadly nightshade (i know it's related to potatoes) but i haven't heard of Black Nightshade.
I'll let it grow but keep an eye on it - we don't have kids or pets so I'm not so worried about poisonous plants. Plus after visiting the Poison Garden in Alnwick last week I found out pretty much everything in my garden is poisonous so it seems it's not really adding to the risk.
Plants in my garden I already knew were poisonous: foxgloves
Plants in my garden I now know are also poisonous: hellobores, columbines, and black nightshade

What are the leaves like? It reminds me of a dahlia but that isn't the kind of plant that just wafts in! From the photo the petals look textured, is that right?

Yes, petals look a bit fleshy and they're shiny. The leaves are dark green with five points, about 2 inches long by an inch wide.
It's short too, about 8 inches high.

Is it a hibiscus - look at these:

The centre of yours looks different, but perhaps the angle of the photo?

I don't think so, it's very similar but not quite right I don't think. Hibiscus seems a bit exotic to pop up in N22! Also, the centre stem of mine is short.

That does look very similar! I have a friend who is going to send a pic to the RHS for identification - will let you know what they come up with.
