Angela, I believe our new 'Top Team' want to ensure all our 8-year olds have some testing summer foreplay before taking on the rigours of their Marital Arts course. The old male-dominated Cabinet would never have shown such understanding of childhood's needs.
However Matt, I suspect that like me, Eddie was placed in front of a class of faintly embarrassed 11 and 12 year olds armed only with a couple of leaflets from Family Planning and a sense of humour to discuss such matters.
In answer to James' question, STDs are dealt with in secondary school sex ed lessons. By 13 some of our 'freer spirits' were already having regular chlamydia tests which is the biggest problem for youngsters since it is symptom free and causes terrible problems later if untreated. I understand that parents might find 8 a trifle young, but at 12 youngsters will already be receiving advice and information about STDs.
Angela, how were you viewing the junior guide? I have a paper copy that incorporates both sections and I think the idea is for the STD ad to face the first section of the 13-19 section. However, it could have been a little more discreet by placing it further into the guide, I suppose.
How our French and Italian cousins laugh at the ridiculous UK attitude to sex. Is it any wonder we have all the problems associated with this ignorance ? The stats (please don't quote mark twain) speak clearly and simply.
Oh, I agree, James, that we need to improve sex education in this country and having taught it to teens, I was amazed at their ignorance and the persistance of myths around sex, but it is our Dutch cousins to whom we should look.
And I'm always amazed at the parents who can bat away a conflicting argument with either "you don't have any kids of your own" or "that woman has so many children she doesn't know what to do".
Before we go bringing our own hangups on sex into our children's experience of it, I think we should look at what academics who study this stuff say. Dr Petra Boynton is highly recommended (and a mum).
I looked at the online version on the Haringey Council website - a 4 page document with the last page being devoted to the screening programme. It starts off with 'Get Tested' in huge letters.
I totally understand and agree that by 12 or so that more advice & info is needed.
