Thanks for this Liz. We are all expected to participate in the democratic process, and yet it’s notable and disturbing how terrified our political would-be masters and mistresses are to actually present themselves in person before us. Seemingly gone are the open local public meetings of the past, where politicians like Wilson would face down and even welcome hecklers. All we have now are pre-arranged photo-opportunities, notified only to party supporters and journalists – sometimes not even the latter.  Is it any wonder young people are saying they won’t be dignifying a cynical and broken system with their participation? (and I speak as someone with a close relative standing in this election).

oh yeah,  the same old cynics view.. I think Liz's list proves you wrong.

I AGREE with Stephen about the list of public meetings, notified in advance to the public (example)!

They are open. They have to be pre-arranged, specificying a time and a place, otherwise you might turn up and no one was there!

As for photo-opportunities, all but one in the list begin at 7 PM, when the light isn't ideal for photos. Think up a good question, go along and participate in a good old-fashioned Parliamentary hustings!

I went to the carers meeting on Park Road, to see Catherine West and Gordon Peters discuss the ongoing issue of care provision in Haringey, fortunately no cult of celebrity there.
