How we slowly lose our buildings heritage
Some loss of heritage is dramatic and comes with earshattering demolitions. The most recent such loss in Harringay was the destruction of the old laundry near the corner of Colina Road.
Much loss, however, is gradual, sometimes so gradual we don’t notice it. I spotted this house today on Wightman Road and grabbed this photo as a record of a moment in time. I imagine that soon when I walk past, like the neighbouring house, there won’t be any pediment remaining.

Quite apart from the heritage loss Hugh I’d be rather worried about the loss of my head every time I walked under it.

Very upsetting to see this. Is it possible the other half will be reinstated? Sadly, I think I know the answer to my own question.

Very sad to see this though I think its probably more to do with settlement of the left hand pillar which is leaning to the left. The crack to the door step is another indication of what is really happening.
This looks like being an expensive repair if the pediment is to be reinstated. Back in the day when such properties were originally built we had a good level of craftsmen specialising in such intricate work. Sadly, I fear many of these old fashioned skills are almost gone.

They are still around but not that easy to find David. A few years ago the ceiling in my living room partially collapsed. Luckily for me it was covered by my insurance. They sourced someone (from Northampton I recall) to come and take casts from what was left of the ceiling and they rebuilt it with all the original ornate plasterwork recreated. I shudder to think how much it must have cost!
