Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone.

I am new here.  I wondered if anyone could help me.

I am fed up with houses illegally converted into bedsits without planning permission.

  • Me

Haringey Council doing nothing about it!  Instead pay for the rent of the tenants and r grant certificate of lawfulness and grant planning permission for more bedsits to be built.

  • One of the bedsits is also a brothel.  My neighbours have had death threats because of reporting anti social behaviour to the police.
  • The bedsits are disgusting and dirty.  Mice and cockcroaches everywhere.
  • Rubbish everywhere.
  • I live in a semi and now garages attached to the house next door has been granted planning permission to build a 1 bed flat, 2 storey extension.  This property is called an extension, but is a separate dwelling and separate entrance.  Can this be called an extension?
  • Can anyone help me???  I need help quick.  I have 1 week left to take this to Court

Thanks TBD.  I have sent the above email to over 50 councillors and 2 MPs yesterday.  Haringey are useless or turning a blind eye.

I would visit one of your councillors at their next surgery. Face to face discussions with councillors tend to be the most productive.

Best of luck!

Thanks Jerry!  Not much in the past.

Very happy to help and advise on this. Drop me an email with all the details on Karen.alexander.haringeylibdems@gmail.com and we can take it from there.
You could take your case to David lam my as we did when threatened with the possibility of the flat (our home) we had bought being subject to a enforcement notice. To be told we were too white and too middle class and he wouldn't be able to take up our case. Harringay planning department are inept and possibly corrupt. David Lammy not interested in helping innocent victims of the abuse of planning applications by developers.

thanks Otiscat.  I am beginning to believe it

He likes a photo op though!

Some evidence and details please, Otiscat.

Because whatever anyone thinks of David Lammy I find it very hard to imagine him saying in terms what you report.

Of course, I would say that wouldn't I? (Echoing the famous words of Mandy Rice-Davies.) And yes, I'm a Labour party member and was elected as a Labour councillor. Nor do I make any secret of my consistent and long-term support for David Lammy. (Although I've always found him ready to listen to and consider sharp criticism of his views and actions; and alternative ideas.)

But I also think it's vitally important that - whatever our political views and affiliations - we disentangle the different threads of this problem. For example, a key factor is Planning law and permitted development -which has been loosened-up.

Another factor is the Council's policies. The LibDems were right to call for a borough-wide licensing scheme. I voted for it. Where they were irresponsibly wrong was to play the silly game of tabling an amendment at the last minute instead of arguing carefully and persuasively, with material sent out in advance that their proposal was solidly based on work done by backbench councillors.

Where the Kober Kabal were irresponsibly wrong was to instruct their glove puppets to vote it down to score a Party point. There could and should have been a working compromise in the interests of Haringey's residents.

What a shame we don't have intelligent grown-ups "leading" the two parties. Instead we have Judy and Punch playing "councils" in the school playground.

This isn't an issue about one flat; one house; or one street. It's everyone's issue. House and flat-sharing, lodgers, HMOs, hostels, conversions, extensions etc all have a legitimate and vital role in the provision of homes for people. But not with a free-for-all. Especially as some landlords and developers are simply predators.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor 1998-2014)

I certainly WILL NOT BE VOTING LABOUR NOR WILL MY NEIGHBOURS

Jamie, have you clearly established whether or not the planning "extension" is actually legal - permitted development" - under the current legislation? For most people this may be the the crucial question as buy-to-let landlords take over more properties.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

Hi Alan.

I am not sure, but Haringey Council have granted planning permission.  Separate dwelling, with a separate entrance, next to the property next door (which will turn my property into a end of terrace), is being called an extension.  Is this right?  Can anyone clarify?

Thanks.

Jamie

I'm not an expert, but creating an 'extension' and giving it its own entrance is SURELY in breach of all kinds of regulations...can anyone please confirm??

In any case, this sounds appalling. Good luck getting someone to listen.
