Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Afternoon all. I'm after some advice...

A few years ago we had our loft converted (third storey added to Victorian terraced house) and while the extra room has been great, the loft space is far from comfortable in hot and cold spells - that is, it is often very cold in winter and, even more so, scorching in the height of summer (like now).

We have a (fixed) dome skylight in the roof of the loft landing. We have recently covered it completely with black fabric which at least blocks out the burning sun but the heat from downstairs still rises to that space - the highest in the house - and this then spreads to the adjacent rooms. The fact that so much of the wall area of the loft rooms is exposed to the open air and sun doesn't seem to help either.

Has anyone else had their loft converted and had a skylight fitted? Has anyone got one that opens? Anyone got any tips which don't involve buying expensive (and environmentally unfriendly) air conditioning?

Thanks in advance!

Velux awning blinds help and black out blinds that you keep down in heat. Unfortunately loft spaces over 25 degrees will get hot! We anticipated the issue and got additional shields under the domes. Every thing works till you hit over 25-27. We also use fans.
cold is a little harder if the radiators installed don’t heat the space….

You could get a solar powered A/C unit. Don't know much about it, maybe others do

The only real option, avoiding fitting air con, is to have opening skylights and increase the insulation.

As you'll have a dark tile roof that is angled into the sun for much of the day it soaks up a lot of heat, without sufficient insulation then it will radiate into the room. How much insulation did you have fitted during the conversion?

You need a roof light (skylight) fitted in place of the dome, so that all the hot air can escape. You can get remote controlled ones with blinds (I think Velux sell them). If you want more fitted, it will be expensive as the builder will have to break into the ceiling.

As the space is also cold in the winter, it's making me think that it's more than just hot air escaping that is the issue. That's where my through to insulation went.

We did a loft conversion too and have a motorised flat Velux window at the top of the stairs. It has a rain sensor so will close automatically. It's also possible to get a venting version which opens at a set temperature. It wasn't that expensive and was worth every penny. DM me if you want any further info.

Fitting solar panels will reduce heat gain by creating shade for the most exposed side of the roof, as well as offering the obvious other benefits

Yes I’ve got the same !

I’ve had bespoke fitted black out blinds now much better
