Description

To further the advancement of horticulture in the UK and abroad, grants
are available for projects in support of horticultural research, the
creation, preservation and maintenance of public gardens, publication
of books on horticulture, study visits, plant collecting expeditions
and training schemes for gardeners.

Value Notes

Grants range from up to £1,000 for small grants and up to £10,000 for larger amounts although there are no restrictions.

Grants are usually made once for the individual project, but grants paid annually over a period of two to three years are possible.

The Trust also provides support for several traineeships in horticulture each year (August to July); these are awarded to applying gardens who each find a suitable trainee.

Extended Description

The Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust Grant is provided and
administered by the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust and is available
to individuals, organisations and institutions throughout the UK.

The scheme is intended to support organisations undertaking
horticultural projects to further knowledge and education.

In particular, the scheme wishes to support projects with the following
themes:
• The advancement of research in any branch of horticulture or botany
with a strong horticultural content and the publication of the results
of such research.
• Assisting in the creation, development, preservation and
maintenance of gardens accessible to the public.
• Promotion of the cultivation and wide distribution of plants which
have horticultural value or are otherwise of value to mankind.
• Promotion of the cultivation of plants new to horticulture.
• Assisting in the publication of books or other works relating to
the science of horticulture.

Latest Information

Grant applications should be submitted well before the deadline dates
of 15 February and 15 August each year, and the end of March each year
for traineeships.

Key Criteria

The grant is available to any individual, organisation or institution
in the United Kingdom and, so far as it is charitable, outside the
United Kingdom, as the Trustees in their absolute discretion think fit.
Applicants should have an interest in the furtherance of horticulture.

Eligible Expenditure

Grants are available for individual, identified projects of
significance to horticulture (or botany with a strong horticultural
content) and education for horticulture. Projects supported are wide
and varied and some examples of the types of projects that might be
considered eligible for a grant are listed below:
• Training schemes for gardeners run by appropriate organisations.
• Provision of education programmes in gardens open to the public.
• Preparation of exhibits or exhibitions of horticultural interest.
• Restoration of historically interesting gardens which are, or will
be open to the public.
• Development of new gardens which will be open to the public.
• Restoration of particular facilities already within a garden open
to the public.
• Development of new facilities within a garden already open to the
public.
• Research projects in horticulture or botany with a strong
horticultural content.
• Plant-collecting expeditions to areas of horticultural interest in
which the collection of horticulturally interesting plants is a major
purpose of the expedition.
• Publication of books on horticulture or containing matter of
considerable horticultural interest.
• Study-visits by horticulturalists or botanists with strong
horticultural links for the purpose of advancing horticultural
knowledge.

Match Funding Restrictions

Funds may be awarded for the whole sum requested, or for a proportion
of that sum. If a proportional grant is awarded, it may be conditional
on the applicant raising the rest of the necessary funds.

Restrictions

Grants are not made for projects in commercial horticulture or
agriculture. Nor are they made to support students taking academic or
diploma courses of any kind.

Application Procedure

Applications should be made in writing and should include:
• A brief description of the project for which funding is being
sought.
• A budget, including details of any other funding which has been
sought and a request for a specific amount.
• A copy of the organisation's most recent accounts.
• Details of staffing.
