I was wondering how many people have resolved to become vegetarians as the horsemeat scandal unfolds. And today it's donkey.

As a veggie for 23 years plus, I don't see what the fuss is about. Flesh is flesh be it horse, cow, 'organic', 'free range' squirrel or road kill.

Agree, and I'm a bit disappointed that I can't tick "horse meat" off on my "what have I eaten" list because rather than relabel it, they're taking it off the shelves.

This will be the third time I've had cause to roll out my favourite G.K. Chesterton Poem...

I disagree Birdy - and I can also claim the 20-years-plus veggie stripes here.

Nobody should be lied to about what goes into their food, end of. Horse meat may be considered benign, but what if it was something different next time - a serious allergen or the next type of meat to become contaminated with BSE?

I agree that it's hypocritical to sentimentalise horses over other animals, and on that point yes it is kind of a 'fuss', but personally I think there are reasons to see a difference between animals and their suitability for food even if not on grounds of 'cuteness'. 

Not quite. Tell that to a Muslim, Jew or Hindu -  Or someone with a meat allergy. Plus - I love shellfish - but I would steer clear of eating a blue octopus. 'Flesh' isn't always edible.

Mainly though, I prefer my meat to be what it purports to be - and not LARGE% mystery ingredient.

Vegetarian for 25 years here - but I don't think any of us can really be complacent about knowing where everything we eat comes from, and it's made me think a lot more about that. There's an idea doing the rounds that most vegetarians are rubbing their hands and cackling with glee over this story, but it's wholly unfounded - who would find anyone being lied to about where their food comes from funny?

The main thing it's made me feel super uncomfortable about is feeding processed pet food to my cats. I'm looking into buying 'welfare grade' stuff instead, but it's double the price...I will probably try them on it though as currently I AM being a hypocrite.

Most vegetarians I've spoken to about it are just bewildered about why there's a fuss (other than the mislabelling aspect).

Really? That's odd, because I totally get why there's a fuss. I didn't think people generally liked being lied to, and am sure there have been fusses about far more trivial misinformation scandals.

Well for most people there isn't a fuss if you take away the mislabelling.

I'm confused as to why vegetarians are confused. But think on it as buying a banana and it turns out its a cucumber that's been dyed yellow.

 As for the meat is meat thing - one might question why vegetarians don't eat meat when lots of them eat chocolate. It's full of bits of animal.

 

The media have made a huge thing about people being "disgusted" (etc.) about the concept of eating horse.  That's what the vegetarians I've spoken to don't get - it is just the "meat is meat" thing.

I'd like to hope that I'd be able to tell that a cucumber dyed yellow was not a banana  - the issue on the mislabelling is that in the affected products, you can't tell because the meat is minced, seasoned and in some cases covered in sauce, so you'd not be able to tell unless you were a meat connoisseur, and that's how they got away with it (until now, anyway).

I would hope so too!

I haven't met anyone who's disgusted. But then, I've never met anyone who's admitted to eating a findus lasagne ;-) 

 

I admit to eating a FIndus vegetarian mousaka when visiting out of town. And vegeburgers. Sometimes folk cant think of what to give a no meat no fish person like myself. I am concerned about what might be in so-called vegetarian ready meals. I hardly ever buy them but do sometimes have them. They could be just as easily falsely labelled and that is the issue for me with the horsemeat scandal. Wrong labels. Lies. Tampering with...it could go way beyond horse/beef. 

I dont feel I can trust those preparing and selling food and labels might be meaningless. So I feel no glee as a vegetarian only despair about the global food industry.
