Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Hornsey Lane Anti-Suicide Campaign would like to remind TfL and Haringey Council of their earlier commitment to find a way to get better anti-suicide measures put in place at Hornsey Lane Bridge. They will be holding a peaceful demonstration on the bridge on Sat 29th June at 11 am.

"Hornsey Lane Bridge is a well-known suicide spot over the Archway Road. The campaign was sparked by the deaths of three men in just over three weeks at the end of 2010. Sadly, yet another man jumped off 'Suicide Bridge' on 7th June.

TfL and Haringey Council have said in the past that they would jointly fund some measures, but things have gone worryingly quiet and we've effectively been 'squeezed out' of the picture.

We're planning to step up the campaign with a short, peaceful demo on the bridge on Sat 29th June at 11am. We'll be trying to get as big a group of people along as possible, and, inspired by a 'Mad Pride' event that took place there a few years ago, we will hold hands across the bridge.

The plan is to remember all those who have died there and also to embarrass the authorities into getting their acts together.

We would aim for a strong media presence, and we'll be inviting a variety of local big names including Marjorie Wallace CBE (CEO of the charity Sane).

We'd love it if you could attend also; you don't need to be there long - we just need a photo - and it may be the final push that's needed to save vulnerable lives."

Please let me know if you plan to attend mrssarahcope@googlemail.com

If people can't use this then they will use trains. As I've said before there are actually very few options available to men and women who want to kill themselves with a decent degree of certainty (and avoid just a nasty crippling). Coq d'Argent is available for those who can afford an expensive French lunch...

Why can't we put a bit more effort into just saying hello to one another? That would probably prevent a lot of suicides.

You may be right that some people will commit suicide whatever is done however making the bridge more difficult to jump from may just give someone pause for thought, and just maybe give time for them to reconsider or get help. The demonstration is not against those trying to commit suicide but trying to engage with TfL and Haringey Council to find some answers to an ongoing problem as the people who live nearby, the emergency services and the families are badly affected when someone has committed suicide from the bridge. As well as suggestions of railings or nets, there has also been discussion about placing posters for the Samaritans at the bridge.
And you are right about saying hello it makes such a difference getting a friendly smile and just passing the time of day.
