The Hornsey Historical Society is currently looking for volunteers to help with the many different things they do. If you have some spare time and are interested in the history of the area, they would love to hear from you.
Now in its fifty-first year, the Hornsey Historical Society (HHS) is one of the most respected and active local history groups in London. Almost uniquely amongst similar groups, the society has its own building which enables it to keep a physical a shop, run its Friday Enquiries facility and maintain a physical archive.
In addition, the society also publishes books, guides, an annual bulletin and a regular members' newsletter. Some publications have been recognised with awards and most are the fruit of crucial original research. The HHS also organise lectures and visits, work with local schools and maintain a website regularly updated with articles and information about the area's history. The society also keeps an eye on planning applications and are represented in local conservation and campaign groups.
They wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the help of a dedicated team of volunteers filling a range of roles, including:
They are looking for people to join the team to help out with many of the roles. Other than time and enthusiasm, they don’t ask for any specific skills. If you have some knowledge of IT, retail, accounts, research, publishing or education your expertise would be put to good use, but the Society welcomes enthusiasm and an interest in our local area's history as much as anything.
If you are interested in getting involved, please drop a note to secretary@hornseyhistorical.org.uk with your name and mobile number and they’ll give you a call. Feel free to state any particular thing you'd like to help with, or leave it for exploration during a discussion.
