Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was prompted by Hugh’s ramble through hidden corners of Wood Green to look again at the man, Thomas Hewitt QC, who gave his name to Hewitt Avenue on the Noel Park Estate.  Among some other things, this man was a director of the company that bought the land on which the Noel Park Estate was built and which also built the houses.  This was the Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company (this name rewards a little digging).  I wonder too whether his name is behind Hewitt Road N8 (where our esteemed website administrator himself lives) and, if so, whether this means that that company built some houses on the ladder.

Whether he did or not, Thomas Hewitt (born 1837 died 1921) was a considerable person, who after the end of Victoria’s reign became the president of the London Arbitration Court and was knighted.  He can therefore be found more easily as Sir Thomas Hewitt KC.  He was also mayor of Kensington and apparently declined a stint as Lord Mayor of London on the grounds that he couldn’t afford the expense!

This photo of Hewitt shows a striking resemblance to King Edward VII:

If this is our man, his taste in domestic architecture can, apparently be found at his splendid house in Devon overlooking Lynmouth which is now known as Hewitts Hotel:  https://www.hewittshotel.com/

I’m pretty sure that the ALGDC weren’t active anywhere on the Ladder. So the provenance of the name of Hewitt Road N8 remains a mystery.

His house looks rather fittingly patterned after a row of Victorian terraced houses!

Shame about the absence of connection with Hewitt Road. I got all excited there for a minute.

100 years ago this year when my Grandfather & family lived there.

I'll keep watching. Always a delight to follow your history features.

Has a feature been done on the origins of Effingham Road?

Kind regards,

Tony
