Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hewitt Road this morning is dangerously icy for anything other than a 4WD car.

We've had at least 3 cars slide into parked cars, causing a fair bit of damage, and one motorbike fall. Luckily there's an old diversion sign at the top of the road that I've put out to discourage muppets from using the road.

If you are out and about, please don't try to use the road until the gritters have been round.

Please take notice of this - having spent most of last night and some time this morning trying to help drivers on their way after smashing into parked cars, I do not intend to do it again this evening. If all the cars parked down Hewitt are not smashed into by the end of the week it will be a miracle!!
For those who live on Hewitt, a couple of things that might help protect your car:

- try to park at the bottom of the hill or right at the top
- Park on the left side as there's a slope to the right - most cars I see skidding go that way.
- the bit outside around nos 50 - 60 seems to be one of the worst at the moment.

Of course moving your car might be impossible without crashing yourself...
I'd say definitely DON'T try and move your car. Try walking on the road first. If you can't walk on it, you can't drive it.
I now have a nice collection of photos of people who've crashed their cars into parked cars. Which will be finding their way to the owners of the damaged cars.

Not that I'm saying people would have just driven off, but at least one guy hadn't got out of his car until approached...
Well done Malcolm.

Shouldn't the council or police close off Ladder roads if the council can't or won't grit them to make them safe. People were sliding all over the shop on Effingham and that's hardly a hill!

Half expecting my car to have a dent in when I get back from work.

Yes this is a real concern. Watched a pizza delivery man on motorbike sliding all over the place last night. And that's on Falkland Rd which is flat.
Yup, well done Malcolm - just what I did before Xmas.

What should be unbelievable but sadly is only too predictable is that some people are still ignoring the sign, entering the road and....surprise surprise getting stuck. One particularly determined guy entered from Wightman about half an hour ago, managed to get as far as my house, just over the crest of the hill, and got stuck. We got him safely to the side of the road, then 10 mins later he tried turning round and is now stuck in the middle of the road. Unghh!
Nick his wheels. That'll stop him.
He was very persistent. After about an hour, he found some builders' sand from somewhere - the type with big stones in - and he managed to turn round and get out at the top end of the road. He's left a few piles of stones spread over the road, ready to be sent flying into the paintwork of parked cars.
Hampden Road, though iced up, is negotiable with care. Not that care would help if, as I did, you meet a dimwit driving the wrong way while gassing on a handheld phone. To add insult to (potential ) injury, he seemed to expect me to pull into the side to let him pass.
It's probably only passable because it's so potholed and crappy that ice cannot form on it.
Nah, the pot holes in Hewitt have just turned into glaciers. Probably the same in Hampden.
