Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Help, foxes are keeping me awake every night and ruining my garden.
For the last couple of months a group of about 4 foxes have been getting into my back garden every night and running riot. They have dug holes in my lawn, knocked over patio tubs, brought rubbish in from people's bins, including dirty nappies, and have broken one of my fences by jumping up on it and running along it. They also screech from about midnight to around 4am. I have tried using repellant sprays and gels, but they don't seem to deter them at all.
I am at my wits end as my garden has been ruined and I am being woken up most nights. Does anyone have any ideas for how to stop them getting into my garden? I don't have any holes in my fences and, until recently, the fences were all in very good condition. They seem to be able to jump up onto the fences which are 5-6 feet high.

isn't there a thread somewhere on here about opening a stables in Ally Pally? We could get some pups from Wood Green Animal Shelter and off we go. I bet we'd even get a Big Society grant for it.

I also heard from someone who actually tried it that male urine works. Her husband and son make a bi-weekly trip to their garden under cover of darkness and have a wee and it seems to work. My previous neighbour also says the sonic deterrents work (and you can set it so that it does not affect other animals).

Unfortunately I live in an all-female household (me and my daughter) so we have no access to male urine (no offers please!). We tried putting chilli powder on the top of the fences and on the soil last night and I don't think the foxes came into our garden, but our cats didn't go out and I'm not sure if that was because of the chilli powder. I have heard mixed reviews of the sonic deterrents - some people say that they are no good. I may try one, but I think fence repair is my next option. There is only one fencer recommended in the tradespeople board so I will give him a ring when I get a moment.

We have had a nightmare with foxes this year too. I have two sonic deterents and they have made a difference. I have to move them around a bit though from time to time. The best ones are motion activated. The foxes will end up ignoring ones that are just a constant noise. Will post the details of where I hot the

Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall collected hair (male) from the local barbers and stuffed it into tights making ball like shapes to hang on the fence, he also mentioned about the male urine (if you can get it), this territorial stance is a better way to go, however, I can amagine a few interesting conversations occuring if you try and collect both

They are a nightmare! We had them in our garden in Bowes Park and the only thing that worked was clearing their den a couple of gardens down (after much neighbourly persuasion). We also used a 'foxwatch' which did really did help. Good luck!

oh sorry - here it is: http://www.fox-watch.co.uk/. They're about £45 so not cheap but they did seem to work for us. Both neighbours on either side got them too, which might've helped.

The guy that has just given me an estimate for fence repairs (William Lamont who was recommended on here) said that a neighbour of his had a sonic repellent and it seemed to work well, so I think I will get one next nonth (i.e. when I get my next pay packet!) My cats will hate me but at the moment they are not going out at night anyway as they are scared of the foxes, so if I just switch on the sonic repellent at night, it will be no different for them.

I'm not sure that it affects cats - it's dog specific - so it might be ok for the cats. Btw the first foxwatch we got broke but they replaced it very quickly. Just something to look out for.

you might get a springer spaniel and install a (big) dog flap! Our dog, Cooper's legs go into a road-runner style comical spin before he eventually gets a grip on the lino, flies through the hatch and up the garden to see them off. Mind, then he barks all night, not perfect but quite entertaining. (Don't worry we dont live on the ladder, if there's a dog barking, its not ours!)
But on the downside, when Cooper stays with Grandad in another town (which he does) the foxes come in the dog flap and steal our favorite shoes ( AntK's rubbish is another womans Jimmy Choo) which we've recovered from gardens up the street. And more than one can of Christmas lager left chilling outside has been retrieved with foxy-tooth perforations following an abortive fence-vault attempt, oozing booze into the flowerbeds (its true, honest...)
