Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Based on community feedback, Haringey Council has announced proposals for the transformation of Wood Green.

Make sure you have your say. The consultation runs from Tuesday 14 February to Friday 31 March 2017.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that this plan is only relevant to people who live in Wood Green.

If the Plan goes ahead as it is it will affect everybody around here in a very big way.

I went along to one of the Wood Green consultation sessions.  It consisted of a series of large display boards that had a lot of words (off putting to many people) but which were very vague and frankly deceptive in places.  There was no leaflet or map to take away summarising the proposals, only a very short flyer with the website address.  Again most people will never look at the plans on the website because of the volume of information.  It's all designed to drown everyone into submission.

The displays made no mention of the HDV or how the development would be funded, and no mention of transferring public assets into private ownership.

Instead there were a range of vague phrases like 'creating a high quality town centre'.

'Building 7000 new homes that residents can afford' - without ever actually defining what that means in practice.

'Haringey's target is to provide 40% of all new housing as being affordable across the borough' - a slippery sentence that could mean, as with Wards Corner, that there is no social or affordable housing on the site.

'Some tall buildings (over 10 storeys) may be acceptable' - without explicitly stating that they plan to build large numbers of tower blocks over 10 storeys.

'350 homes will need to be redeveloped' - easy to miss that they actually mean knocked down.

'There will be investment in health, education, open space, leisure and social and community facilities' - How much? What will be provided? Where is the money coming from? - no explanation.

The feedback forms provided ask for your details then ask 'Which policy / site / paragraph are you commenting on?' - which is impossible to answer since that information wasn't available on the display.  Then the final box,  'Do you have any comments or suggestions for how it could be improved' - not 'Do you think the Council should go ahead with this project ? or 'Do you want public land and buildings transferred from the Council into private ownership?' or 'Do you want 15 years of noise, dust and disruption in Wood Green? '.

Have no doubt they are planning to pull the wool over our eyes and that it will be us that ends up paying for property developers to make a packet.

Thanks for the report Helen, agreed it's extremely tortuous trying to navigate the site, it must be a deliberate move. Thanks for the links WG, will now add my comments, the CPO move is shocking.
