Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Traders on Green Lanes in Harringay will be offering shoppers who drive to Harringay free parking permits to encourage them to return to the area to shop.

Traders on Green Lanes will be trialling a free shoppers permit parking scheme for a limited period in December and January.

Funded as part of the central government 'Portas Scheme', the trial programme has been designed by the traders themselves. It echoes their concerns that what they see as high parking charges are damaging their trade, much of which now comes from out of town rather than from local residents.

If the scheme is successful, the traders will be looking at how they can tackle parking charges in the long term.

If you are given "free" parking by your employer then it should appear on your P11D as a benefit in kind, otherwise you are evading income tax. I would say that the rate for a car park on the private market in Harringay is around £60pcm, or £144 of income tax per annum. I wish this was enforced around here but it's obviously not.

It's shocking that people think it's okay to have a shop or restaurant in Green Lanes yet live in Palmers Green. Don't they value the old traditions? But it struck me yesterday that the rot set in decades ago - and all over the country.

Yesterday evening a friend showed me an episode of The Two Ronnies on YouTube. It's the one where Ronnie Barker goes into a traditional hardware store with a shopping list. And Ronnie Corbett in his traditional brown gabardine coat and flat hat rummages around in cardboard boxes for the items. Just like the little hardware store in the shopping parade where my parents bought paraffin and washing powder.

I expect the owner is still living there above the shop.

The most recent study that was done on Harringay as a retail centre was in 2008. As I wrote a couple of months back, there's a 2012 study in the pipeline. It's in draft right now and will be released after Christmas. That's due to be more granular than the 2008 one and should include shopper demographics etc.
