Just 24hrs to go. I'm sure only the very best of North London will, at this late stage, throw their hats into the ring. Below are some of the vacant constituencies.

I am firmly centre right politically and can’t agree more that the Tory party deserves just the best and not the current gang of self-serving, reckless lunatics who have turned the UK into absolute laughing stock. That being said, you couldn’t pay me enough to vote Tory. Let this basket case of a party spend the next 15 years in opposition. Not a massive fan of Starmer but there is simply no way the current assortment of clowns warrant anythimg but a solid kick out of government.

Speaking to many others in the City/finance it is clear that everyone is yearning for the end of this ludicrous government. 

The sitting government had an incredible electoral mandate that would have kept the party in power for a generation if they had just done something "conservative".

Instead, the party has become what happens when the City (Wall Street / K Street in the US) calls all the shots and the MPs listen to the donors rather than the base.  We rebelled against that in America hence Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis and a handful of others coming to prominence.  Look at the difference when a conservative actually governs as directed rather than keep the seats warm for the next Democrat/Labour return to power: Ron DeSantis won Florida in 2018 by  just 30,000 votes and in 2022 by 1.5 million votes!

If I could actually vote here (paying almost 50% of what I make in taxes isn't enough) I would still vote for the Tories. Because while the Conservative Party is not the solution to all of one's problems, they aren't the cause of them.  You just wait and see what the Labour government does to you for unlike the Conservatives, Labour does mind its base. And that base is Marxist-Islamist to a very significant degree.   

If I lived in the Tottenham district and were legally capable of standing for Parliament I would do so. I would still have my bum handed to me but I would draw a lot of converts in the process as I know how to talk to people and would be willing to knock on 5000 doors.

I would respectfully disagree.  If you were "right" anything you would know what is in store. You haven't seen what "self-serving and reckless" looks like till you see Labour in power.  David Lammy is the overture.

Doesn't Mark Michaels drop enough clues indicating U.S citizenship? Also Mark makes so many rudimentary mistakes/false assumptions  about UK Labour politics that some sort of foreign origin is indicated.

Perhaps "Mark" is polishing his/her stand-up show in readiness for the Edinburgh Festival?

P.S. I've had the same letter inviting me for interview as a Tory candidate. It's definitely a spoof. The request to knock on 5000 doors is an obvious fake. All the leaflets are sponsored by a local Pizza business. 

Alan, I did pick up on that, though I hadn't heard of Mark until just now.

But the US allows dual citizenship, and I know a fair few US citizens who have acquired UK citizenship and vote here.

I really don't get your point re living in Tottenham. You do know that you can stand for any constituency, you don't need to live there, right? And a comparison with USA is pointless. It's a completely different system, so what's the point of the comparison? 

Kotkas, could you please translate your curious string of statements (above) for me.

What does it mean for you to be "firmly centre right politically".

You say you want to see the current Tories - "a basket case of a party"  spending 15 years in opposition.

You tell us you aren't a fan of a Starmer. But surely, Sir Keir and Rachel Reeves is enough of a self-serving 'Tory substitute for your friends in the City/Finance who you say agree with you.

By any chance do you have any views about reducing poverty, improving education, health and housing? Avoiding climate disaster?  Any views on Sir Starmer's enthusiasm for genocide and other crimes against humanity in Israel / Palestine?

Perhaps you aren't going to vote?

Centre right is: typically small state, individual freedom, individual responsibility, tax as low as can be sustainably maintained, socially conservative (ie. Tolerant of others up to the point where it causes social and cultural problems), realist not idealist in terms of foreign policy, armed forces that are strong and resilient and well-resourced, controlled immigration so it's in the best economic interest of this country (acceptance of sustainable levels of genuine refugees who apply from their own or the first safe country they flee to), democracy and the rule of law, courts and police that apply and enforce that law (and are seen to do so), abhorrence of corruption, meritocracy regardless of background (equality of opportunity, not outcome), separation of powers, loyalty (to family, state, sovereign and, ideally, God although adherence to Judeo-Christian cultural values is the key rather than church attendance), appreciation and protection of the natural environment, celebrating one's national history and cultural traditions (and expectation that those coming here integrate whilst having the freedom to maintain their own cultural practices privately ie.fit in rather than seek to recreate the place they left), choice of schooling system without penalty with state funded schools being 100% politically neutral with a civil and public service to match.

Now the recent batch of Conservative cabinet holders have fallen short. However, there is a core of good, decent 'one nation' conservatives (helping others up the ladder) who will still be around once the current leadership scurry off. A loss to Labour will enable those to regroup and return in five years. And they will have a Labour mess to fix (after the seek to ideologicaly drag everyone down to the bottom rung).

That's me. Kotkas might just appreciate a good suit.

I think I probably had poor starting points by going to a traditional grammar school which inoculated me against largely snobbish and class ridden underlying values. Despite some committed caring and excellent teaching staff.

In my teens the first Tory councillor I met told me he joined the party because he was a local builder in a wealthy area and he wanted his firm to get their slice of the contracts cake. (Yes an honest Tory'; I was surprised and impressed,) 
So when questions were recently raised about Government contracts under Covid, I wasn't surprised.

I've never had a good suit. But had to buy a suit when I was a lawyer. It was so uncomfortable I Ieft the jacket on the back of the office chair for the few occasions when I had to go to court. Years ago Oxfam used to provide very cheap secondhand suits for people going to interviews. Yes a suit bank to go with the food banks.

I accept there are decent One Nation Tories. The journalist Peter Oborne is one. I assume Theresa May was another, But look how badly she was treated by colleagues.

Anyway thanks again for the frank full reply. As we all know the polls suggest Starmer will be the next Tory PM. Like Groucho Marx, if you don't like his principles he has others.

I think many people do join the Conservative party to use it for their own advantage. I have met men and women like the one you refer to as well. I have also met Trades Union members and Labour party members who have done the same in their respective organisations. A certain type of person simply uses whichever structure is available as a vehicle for their own advancement. 

It is rare that people enter politics with a genuine intention to help others and serve their country. It is even rarer that they maintain those motivations over time. 

So what are the values or principles that the Labour Party should have at the core of its offering? Are they very different from the ones I have mentioned above?
