Operation Withern: 39 more images released 19.08.11
Detectives from Operation Withern are today (19 August) releasing a further 39 images of people we would like to speak with in relation to recent disorder affecting parts of London.
Operation Withern's priority is to bring to justice those who have committed violent and criminal acts. As the detailed and thorough investigation progresses we will be issuing photographs of people who were in the vicinity of the disorder and who may be able to help officers with their enquiries.
These images we are releasing today relate to the looting and violent disorder in Lewisham, Wandsworth, Croydon, Haringey, Lambeth, Waltham Forest, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets on 6 and 8 August.
Flickr is hosting the photos so that the public can help the Metropolitan Police Service identify those who committed violent and criminal acts on London's streets.
If anyone recognises individuals in the photographs, has any information about the violence and disorder that has occurred or their own images or footage they would like to pass to Operation Withern they should contact the Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142. Alternatively anyone can report crime and provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Operation Withern includes officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, specialist investigators from the Public Order Branch as well as police support staff. The Major Investigation Team has begun and will continue securing the various and often large crime scenes, retrieving forensics and going through thousands of hours of CCTV. This will be a long-term operation although work is already underway to identify those individuals responsible.
A dedicated webpage http://www.met.police.uk/disordersuspects/ has gone live displaying the images of people the Metropolitan Police Service wants to speak to in connection with the serious disorder and violence that has been affecting parts of London.
In addition Flickr is hosting the same photos so that the public have as many opportunities as possible to help the MPS identify those who committed violent and criminal acts on London's streets.

Acting Commissioner thanks Londoners 19.08.11
The Acting Commissioner, Tim Godwin has written a open letter of thanks to Londoners for their support of the Metropolitan Police Service during and after the recent disorder:
Dear Londoners,
I want to thank all of you who have shown such immense support for the police in recent days. Individual officers have proudly told me stories of being offered cups of tea, meals, rest facilities or being applauded as they walk down the street. It is a testament to the close relationship that has been built up between the police and the people of London that even in the areas worst affected you are supporting us. Londoners have come together to help us identify the looters and violent people that damaged our city. This has enabled us to charge over 1,000 offenders with crimes committed during the disorder, and we will continue to pursue the remaining offenders relentlessly. We have seen record numbers of people applying to be police volunteers and Special Constables in the last week. Londoners have been standing alongside us at this time of challenge. London was faced with unprecedented violence and criminality and by flooding the streets with officers and robustly policing we ended the vast majority of the disorder within a few days. Undoubtedly the overwhelming support you have given us and the outstanding way in which Londoners have worked together has helped the capital recover so quickly. I've said many times that I am so proud of the men and women of the Met, never more so than now. But I am also proud of the way in which our city has responded, supported each other and gets on with business. Around the clock your officers are on your streets and in your communities, here for London, working to keep you safe. Thank you for your continued support.

Friday 19 August Bramble Close N15 search warrant arrest updates: On the morning of Thursday 18 August police carried out a number of search warrants in Bramble Close N17 during which seven people were arrested. Disorder related crime figures 22.08.11
Latest figures show that there were 3,296 reported total notifiable offences linked to the disorder that occurred across London between 6 and 9 August.
Of these, the most common offences were: burglary in other buildings (1101), criminal damage to a motor vehicle (399) and theft of personal property (310). There were 162 reports of arson.
In response to the disorder a major investigation team was launched by the Metropolitan Police Service, codenamed Operation Withern.
Operation Withern is an MPS-wide effort led by officers from the Specialist Crime Directorate working together with detectives, uniformed officers and police staff from across the MPS. While SCD will retain responsibility for some major incidents seen during the disorder, local borough police will be focussing on pursuing those responsible for the disorder seen in their area.
Commander Simon Foy said: "We continue to work closely with London's communities and are extremely grateful for their invaluable assistance. With your help we have brought a significant number of people to justice.
"But the scale of the task the Met's officers face is not to be underestimated. Twenty two of London's 32 boroughs were affected by the disorder and there are many more people who must answer for their actions.
"I urge anyone who has any information about the violence and disorder that occurred across London to contact the Operation Withern Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142. Alternatively anyone can report crime and provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
We estimate that we currently have around 20,000 hours of CCTV footage to view, although this is likely to increase as we gather further material from CCTV, the public and other sources.
Forensic and crime scene examiners have been working on more than 1,100 crime scenes and more than 300 forensic submissions have already been made to labs.
The MPS is working closely with the CPS to ensure that cases are processed quickly. A large number of people have appeared in court and while some have already been convicted and received prison sentences many cases have been remanded to Crown Court.
To date 1838 people have been arrested in connection with the disorder including 396 juveniles.
Of that number 1049 people have been charged in connection with the disorder which includes 218 juveniles.

Operation Withern: Eight arrests made in Hackney 23.08.11
Officers from Hackney's Operation Withern Team have made eight arrests this morning, Tuesday 23 August.
Following extensive CCTV work, five search warrants were executed in a co-ordinated operation early this morning, with support from Level 2 officers. This led to the arrest of seven people on suspicion of violent disorder, firearms offences and breach of bail. Officers recovered S1 handgun ammunition hidden in a sock at one address.
An eighth person subsequently attended Stoke Newington Police Station and handed himself in.
DI Phil Langworthy, SIO for Op Withern at Hackney said: "Since the terrible events on 8th August where our colleagues and the community were attacked, everyone at Hackney has been working tirelessly to bring the offenders to justice; we will continue to do so until everyone has been caught. The community have responded very positively, providing information in response to local and national media appeals".
Det Supt Lloyd Gardner, said: "The day following the disorder Hackney made a decision to create a local Op Withern team of 30 detectives with an aim of arresting those involved. We will not stop: the Hackney Op Withern team will keep going to until we bring all the identified suspects to justice. We have executed 50 search warrants. Like all staff across the MPS, Hackney officers and staff have been working flat out and are doing a professional and brilliant job."

Haringey Borough Commander letter to the community

Dear Haringey community member,
We have been working tirelessly with our partner agencies and local community groups in
order to understand how we move forward following the unprecedented scenes of disorder
experienced in Tottenham and across London.
The widespread looting and deliberate damage caused to businesses and homes was the
worst seen for many years and the fact that people have lost their homes, possessions and
livelihoods is a great sadness to us. We were aware of the community’s concerns following the
shooting of Mark Duggan and were taking advice from community representatives; however we
had no indication to suggest that Haringey would be subject to such extreme violence.
We have continued to engage with the wider community whilst the Independent Police
Complaints Commission rightly carries out an independent investigation into the shooting of
Mark Duggan and supports his family. We will continue to listen to the concerns of Mark’s
family and the wider communities as the investigation continues.
These have been some of the most difficult and challenging times for our officers who have
been incredibly brave in their actions to protect the community. Our determination to support
and protect the community has not wavered. Your dedicated local Safer Neighbourhood team
officers continue to patrol the streets of Haringey and to offer reassurance and support to those
affected by the distressing events. Thank you for the overwhelming messages of support that
have helped the morale of our officers and backroom staff.
Over the next month we are committed to attend a series of listening events across the
borough, so that we may understand not only the impact of these terrible events, but also how
we move forward as one community in Haringey.
We recognise that the vast majority of the community abhors the disorder that took place and
have a deep regard for the area in which they live. We share with you those feelings and a
determination to return Haringey to everyday life and business as soon as possible and to
ensure those that harmed the community are brought to justice through the courts.

Key messages
The MPS recognises that the current issue's around disorder are not just about gangs. Gangs were clearly involved in the disorder but other people were too. Police and communities need to work together to understand the motivations of individuals involved and address the issues.
We urge any possible witnesses who have not already come forward to assist the IPCC so they can carry out a full and proper investigation of the death of Mark Duggan for the sake of all those involved.
It is believed that the family of Mark Duggan have requested a private funeral. Communities are asked to respect the wishes of the family
We appeal for calm at and around the funeral of Mark Duggan to allow his family, friends and community to carry out a dignified and peaceful funeral.

Two men and a 16 year old boy are due to be sentenced for their part in a series of linked robberies.
Devante Jonah Cazley aged 18, of Gloucester Drive, N4, Parvez Hussein, aged 22, of Colthurst Crescent, N4 and a 16 year old boy from Hackney, are due to be sentenced for their part in a series of linked robberies.
Detectives carried out an extensive tri borough investigation after 15 men were robbed between December 2010 and February 2011 across Islington, Haringey and Hackney.
In each incident, the victims were threatened with a large machete and what appeared to be a sawn-off shotgun. The victims were then forced to hand over their property, cash cards and PIN numbers, before money was withdrawn from their bank accounts. After several of the robberies, Cazley and Hussein went to a specific cash point in Stamford Hill, N19, and withdrew as much cash as possible from the victims' bank accounts.
Detectives gathered substantial evidence to charge the suspects. They showed the suspects had used the victims’ stolen bank cards shortly after each robbery, and found the victims’ property during searches in the suspects’ homes.
We will update you regarding the sentencing result next week.

A 30 year-old man is due to appear in custody at court today charged with 4 counts of receiving stolen goods
The defendant is the second to be charged after officers seized cosmetics, clothing and electrical goods during a search warrant in Napier Road.
The other defendant, a 26 year-old man, is next due to appear in custody on 13 September.

We promised you an update regarding the sentencing on Friday of three people for a linked series of robberies:
Group sentenced for linked robberies
Two men and a 16 year old boy have been sentenced to a total of 20 years on Friday 2 September 2011 for their part in a series of linked robberies.
Devante Jonah Cazley aged 18, of Gloucester Drive, N4, was sentenced to nine years detention while Parvez Hussein, aged 22, of Colthurst Crescent, N4, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. A 16 year old boy from Hackney was sentenced to two years detention and training order at Blackfriars Crown Court.
Detectives carried out an extensive tri borough investigation after 15 men were robbed between December 2010 and February 2011 across Islington, Haringey and Hackney.
In each incident, the victims were threatened with a large machete and what appeared to be a sawn-off shotgun. The victims were then forced to hand over their property, cash cards and PIN numbers, before money was withdrawn from their bank accounts. After several of the robberies, Cazley and Hussein went to a specific cash point in Stamford Hill, N19, and withdrew as much cash as possible from the victims' bank accounts.
Local officers from the three boroughs were involved in the operation to apprehend the suspects, together with officers from the Territorial Support Group.
Detectives viewed CCTV near the Stamford Hill cash point which showed a silver Rover 75 car in the area around the same time the suspects used the stolen cards.
On 2 February 2011, after Hussein and Cazley had committed another robbery in Oakfield Road, N4, officers observed the same car, which was owned by Parvez Hussein, near the cash point at Stamford Hill. Hussein and Cazley left the car and approached the cash point with the victim’s stolen cash card when officers arrested them. Officers then searched the car where they discovered a machete, an imitation sawn-off shotgun and the victim’s property.
A 16 year old boy was arrested following further enquiries on 18 February 2011.
Detectives gathered substantial evidence to charge the suspects. They showed the suspects had used the victims’ stolen bank cards shortly after each robbery, and found the victims’ property during searches in the suspects’ homes.
On 13 July 2011 the three admitted their respective involvement in committing 10 of the robberies and they all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery.
Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Mark Pearse, from Islington Police, said: "These sentences reflect not only the gravity of the crimes committed by these three defendants but also offer a sense of closure and comfort to the 15 people who were robbed. The background to these crimes highlights the extent to which gang culture and the resulting peer group pressure can impact on young people. The main motivation for these young men was to raise their credibility amongst their peers and show their involvement in serious crime and violence.
"The intricacy of this investigation involved team work on a large scale and the outstanding work, tireless dedication and professionalism shown by the officers and staff involved in this contributed to the successful outcome of this case."
Detective Supt. Adrian Usher, from Islington Police, said: “I am very proud to have led dedicated officers from three separate boroughs and specialist departments who worked together to hunt down the people responsible for these vicious crimes. These individuals chose weapons designed to maximize terror in their victims to elicit their PIN numbers. My team was highly motivated as they had witnessed first hand that in some cases this was a life changing experience for the victims. We will continue to tackle serious violence and robbery, and will relentlessly pursue people committing such crimes.”
Specific details of the robberies:
Hussein and Cazley admitted robbing a man on 6/12/10 in Queens Drive, Hackney, N4.

Cazley admitted robbing a man on 23/12/10 in Oxford Road, Haringey, N4.
Cazley admitted robbing two men on 9/1/11 in Bouverie Road, Hackney, N16. The 16 year old admitted robbing one of those men with Cazley.
Cazley admitted robbing a man on 14/1/11 in Highbury Hill, Islington, N5.
Hussein admitted robbing a man on 18/1/11 in Highbury Hill, Islington, N5.
Both Hussein and Cazley admitted carrying out robberies on 22/1/11 in Stapleton Hall Road, Haringey, N4 then another in Petherton Road, Islington, N5. On 29/1/11 they also robbed a man in Petherton Road, Islington, N5 and another man on 2/2/11 in Oakfield Road, Haringey, N4.
