Do you have any favourite bargain buys in Harringay?
Last time I mentioned online that Baldwins were selling St John and Dolly Brinjal Pickle (yep the posh stuff they have at Borough market) cheaper than the company sells it on their website, it all sold out much to my chagrin, but still I thought I'd share a couple of my favourite buys and hopefully get some tips back.
Gozleme from Yasar's.
I am beginning to suspect that every child in Harringay is being raised on these little packets of scrumminess, as they seem the worst kept secret amongst parents in Harringay. Perfect lunchtime/picnic fare.
Real coffee
I'm always running out of coffee. Harringay Foods keeps me in large packets of Lavazza Rosso at a reasonable price.
The Deli at Almo's
We are steadily working our way through the cold meats and sausages at our local Polish shop. I'm told the other one further up also has a fine selection on their deli counter.
Posh Chocolate at the poundshop next to the post office
Lindt with chilli or a touch of sea salt for a reasonable price
Everything at Baldwins
Have a browse, lots of excellent stuff in their little deli section and in the chillers...and the sausages...oh, go on,just go in and see for yourself

Green and Blacks chocolate, all different kinds, £1.49 a bar at the grocers which used to be called Shamus Abbas, but is now something else - the last one on the left before the bridge, going South.
Pity I gave up chocolate for New Year...
And a request; does anyone know a bakery/patisserie which sells eclairs filled with confectioners custard, as they do on t'Continent, rather than whipped cream? Anywhere within reasonable distance would be fine.

Sounds obvious, but halloumi from Helim (and lots of other local shops too I'd imagine) is a total bargain. I bought some recently from somewhere else in north London (whisper) and it was literally twice the price.

The Indian food centre near turnpike lane station. It's an array of spices, rice, lentils and anything curry related. They literally have everything in there and it's always busy. I never spend more than a tenner.

On the Tollgate Pub side of Turnpike Lane? Yes! Mecca for anyone who cooks Indian - fresh curry leaves, frozen ready-shredded coconut, tiny nuclear-strength dried chillies. Also Ambala on Turnpike Lane for yummy veggie samosas. Prefer the gozleme at Hala to Yashar Halim's, made to order so don't get soggy. Premium price though at £2 each. Dostlar for the freshest veggies on Harringay Green Lanes. Yavuzlar (? Shamus Abass), three-for-a-quid tinned beans.

Khan Bros on Green Lanes (near Falkland Road) and another shop just before the Queen's Head have free-range eggs at approx £1.19 and organic ones ones for £1.39. Suppliers are farms in Herts, Oxon and Sussex.
In Sainbury's they cost between £1.58 to £1.82.
Lebanese flatbreads and pitta breads cheaper and superior quality to those in supermarkets, courtesy of Hollyland Bakery in N17.

Yasar Halim is my new favourite shop. Much better than any other supermarket. cheap fruit and veg, cheap pitta breads and houmous (which I virtually live on *YUMMY!*) and the bakery next door is full of the yummiest and most indulgent treats. I have fallen in love with that place.

Another vote for Yasar Halim. I get groceries there every week and when I was heavily pregnant, the women who sit at the tills would ask me "How long now?" and "Boy or girl?" (which is fairly standard when you're pregnant) *but*, when the baby arrived and I took him in there for the first time, they all clustered round and welcomed him. And when my partner went in, they recognised him as the father (even though he was alone) and were asking him "How's the baby?" It was really heartwarming.
On the bakery bit: Friends who came to stay with us and now live in a different part of London were so enamoured of it that now, whenever *they* have guests to stay, they tell them one of the places they must visit in London is the bakery bit of Yasar Halim!

Same here EA. My son was a bit scared of going in there for a while because he got so much attention - now he loves it (little so and so!).
