Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Twitter has been a while coming to HoL because I've been looking at it and trying to convince my self that it's not a load of hyped nonsense.
I guess you could say that I finally crossed the line this week. HoL is now Twittered-up.
Why?
Well, on one level it can be a frivolous load of tosh - on another level it provides a way to keep people updated.
And here's a take on the why use Twitter issue via a slideshow I embedded here on the site.
What?
At the moment the Harringay Online Tweets (that's messages sent from Twitter) will be a feed from the site including ONLY new posts to the main forum and new blogs. No replies will be included; my sense was that'd be too much. There will also be other occasional updates.
How?
To follow online, go to Twitter.com and join up.
To use Twitter on your phone:
1. Click here for how to register your phone on Twitter.
2. And here for how to send messages to HoL's Twitter from your phone and how to control your Twitter from your phone.
Twitter used to send updates to mobile phones, but sadly as of 14th August 2008, Twitter stopped sending SMS alerts and messages to thousands of international twitter users outside of USA, Canada or India. But, you can still send messages to HoL's Twitter by phone, if you're out and about and you have something to tell us - or if you use a browser on your phone. (Or, if you want to pay for the privilege, Tweet SMS will send you your Tweets at a penny a pop - something I can live without).
But, look, I'm no Twitter expert. So, if I've got any of this wrong, let us all know.
I set the Twitter account up a while ago whilst I was still trying to convince myself, but didn't activate it till yesterday. Somehow there are already three followers.

OK - I think I'm finally getting Twitter. I've added a couple of videos. One on the basics which oriented me as to the real use of Twitter. THe guy cescribes it as a sort of cross between a micro-blogging platform and a an instant messenger - few people use it for its original purpose, to say where they are. Most people use it to stay connected or to micro-blog.
The second video is on an application called Twhirl which you download and makes using Twiter much easier.
Hope they help.
I'm interested because I think Twitter is pointing the way to how the web will be used in the near future. I feel we all SHOULD know what's what around it.

I've been playing with Twitter for about 6 months.
I see the real power as being able to [micro]blog from a mobile phone using a text message, an interface that most people are familiar with. I really like the immediacy of it.
Unfortunately, Twitter changed one of the nice parts of their platform a couple of months ago; Originally you could subscribe to receive updates via text message as well, but they've turned this off, which is a shame.

I believe I am one of the three!
I signed up because I am looking at web 2 technologies for our work websites, and although knew of twitter, didn't really know what the benefits were so decided to give it a whirl - having read your posts though - I don't think anyone needs to know my whereabouts so maybe will not figure in my plans.
I did read a post from one of the not for profit blogs, saying that someone was able to send a text from her mobile to update on a meeting that was going on- if the text facility is pay only, I also can't see this happening. Will follow this post to see comments

The text service is only pay-only to recive text updates. You can update your own twitter a your carrier's prevailing rates. For many of us, with oddles of texts, bundled into our packages, that means in effect for free.
The "knowing where you are" aspect of Twitter was its original intention, but it's really now used more for micro-blogging and a kind of instant messenger service. It's certainly the latter two that interested me.

Liz, after 157 days 6 hrs 7mins I've seen ur question. No, Eddie F remains Twitter-free, as indeed do I. The Pope, however, has joined the Twitterati - some lesser crested cardinal does his tweeting for him. I've become a born-again atheist, thank God.
